Neurontin for sciatica

I got a new pain management doctor about 6 months ago. Im on roxicodone 6x a day, roxicodone 4x a day(breakthrough pain)(half the dose), Xanax 2.5x a day, and soma 3x a day. I can bearly move. I was getting that from my last doctor also, and it was no help, and then his price went up, so i could not afford him, and moved to this new doctor. this new doctor gives me the same meds, but he has also given me something for my sciatica. he started off given me cymbalta. after 3 months there were no results, so he moved me to topiramate. i took that for two months. Now this month he has given me something new called neuontin. My friend has it, and he says it works miricles. I just got my script filled today for it, and i began taking it twice daily. Its 300mg. I was wondering if anyone has ever taken this drug before. If so, then how did it work for you? I am still young, and im a fulltime college student, and also work full time, and i dont want to be on pain medication my whole life. Is this really a miricle drug? my friend told me that it worked right away for him, but my doctor said to make sure to take it everyday without missing a dose, because it takes some time. thankyou for any input.

Hi DJ

Welcome!

I don't take neurotin but it's "big sister" lyrica (lyrica came out after neurotin). These drugs are interchanged by physicians -- insurance companies like neurotin as it is cheaper.

It's not a narcotic but an anti-seizure drug is used successfully to treat sciatica. I've been on 75mg 2x a day which is a fairly low dose and my only side effects are blurry vision and a little weight gain (or it could be the massive amounts of candy I ate over Easter LOL!).

I do also get "blonde moments" from this drug but it could just be my age causing that issue.

Give the drug a chance. I had severe sciatica and time, patience and lyrica seemed to solve the problem for me.

Take care,

Judy

Neurontin

Wink Hi dj,
I take neurontin 3 x a day 600 mgs each. It really does work for me. Some days i feel like I haven't even taken it cuz I get bad pain, numbness, tingling in my butt, legs and feet. But that will happen from time to time. Even if you are on meds, you still have bad days. Keep taken the neurontin. It will help you. Well, let me say I HOPE it helps you. Good Luck Wave

I know that i should of

I know that i should of asked my doctor, but everytime i go in to the office i have so many things running through my head to tell him that i always forget to ask him the basic questions. my doctor did say that it would not take effect right away, and that i would have to keep taking it, then one day i would wake up, and realize that my pain is getting better. how long did you guys take neurontin before you started to get relief, also how long before your relief climaxed as much as physically possiable???

I can't remember how long it took for the Neurontin to kick in. I had to have it increased one time already. I have learned that if you have questions for the dr. the best thing to do is get a pen and paper and write all the questions down when they come to you. I know how you feel. I am having surgery June 9th. I saw the dr. last week to schedule the surgery. He spent a long time with me. I had SO many questions and still do. I told the surgery cordinator that she wasprobably gonna hear from me daily until surgery I do see him again on June 3rd. for the pre op appt. Good luck with the Neurontin. I hope it works. It so worked for me. Smile

My doctor started me off

My doctor started me off with 300 mg twice a day, and i was told that i should not miss a dose. I have been on it since monday and the pain is still there, but i see a slight difference in the numbness. I dont know if its in my head or not but it is definantly a drug which i would like to take further and continue. I have taken cymbalta, and something else that starts with a T. both didnt do nothing. but his i have a feeling that it might work. that you everyone for all of your support. my doctor said that it will take months for the full effects. i hope this really does work.

Did you continue with the neurontin?
just wanted to add here that I have been on this drug for 8 yrs.
I am currently taking 1800mg (600mg x3 per day)...a higher dose was tried recently but wasn't anymore effective than the 1800mg so I lower again.
this drug is has been as God send for me, although it does loose its effectiveness over time....Doctors have recommended I try the Lyrica because its more effective with higher dosages.
I'm Leary of switching to another just yet, I don't think I could survive even one night of the pain while doing the switch over. so will leave that until neurontin has lost all effectiveness.
Just wondering how you made out? I hope after the full potency it gave you relief too.

I took lyrica for 6 months

I took lyrica for 6 months and gained 22 lbs! I haven't tried Neurontin. I take Topiramate now (Topamax). It doesn't work as well as the Lyrica did, but it's helping me lose weight and it does work some!

If you type in Neurontin in the search box at the top of the page, you will find some excellent discussions on with some really good information.

I have been taking Neurontin for almost 11 years and it is a wonderful medication for me. It did take a couple weeks initially to get the levels adjusted so that I started to get relief from it during that time I experienced a bit of drowsiness.

I hope it works as well for you as it does for me.

Neurontin

My 2 cents after being on it for only 4 days. I've been seeing my primary and a pain mgmt doc for close to 2 months, had one left side ESI as L4-L5 with some short term success that lasted about 2 weeks till everything came back as strong as before. Neither had prescribed anything other than Vicondin, rest and continued PT.

Referred to a neurosurgeon who prescribed Neurontin 100mg 3x a day along with Robaxin 500mg 3x a day as needed. I have noticed a significant reduction in the pain already but no effect on the severe numbness in my lower leg when standing/walking.

I know it's a relatively low dose I am on right now, I think he was seeing if this was going to help at all and it seems to have even in this short time.

I think I'm seeing a general theme with all the alternative/non-invasive treatments that "your mileage may vary". Good luck!

low dosage

you are very lucky if a low dose works for you..thats great and don't up it now if its doing the job, you will need to increase over time the low dose worked on me for the first year or so.
I have the same L4-L5 herniation and related radiculopathy
