ok so i am 21 (i have another thread goin upper back pain affecting every aspect of life) but anyways i had a microdiscectomy partial hemi-laminectomy at L5/S1 level on the left side about 4 months ago i have degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and retrolisthesis. my right side is also messed up it was just less prominent than my left side.
well my upper back has been in excruciating pain radiating to my ribs with severe burning sensations nd the burning dont stop. severe headaches and feels like i have a bowling ball on each shoulder. today my right side of lower back started bothering me along with the leg pain and tingling and numbness of my foot and my back on my right side is sore to the touch and sore right above my tailbone and its started goin numb but i can still feel the pain in my bone there, jus started all of a sudden like my left side started out of nowhere before surgery.
i had an mri of my upper back wednesday and it came back normal. but something is causing the pain and burning its not in my head i know when i am hurting. but my family/friends dont understand because they dont feel the pain i am feeling.
well i been doing some research on things and yes i know there are plenty of things that have similar symptoms as other things. is it wrong that i am interested in my physical health? i am 21 and it worries me. one of my friends said you cant look up stuff and diagnose yourself! im not diagnosing myself, just looking to suggest things to be checked for because some drs will say nothing is wrong because ur mri was normal. i am very worried because i have a 1 year old daughter and i want to know whats going on so i can get treatment for whatever it may be. because i wana be at my best as a mother to her. yes i am depressed because of all my pain, but they dont know till they walk a mile in my shoes. but just because i am researching things doesnt mean i am a hypochondriac. i am jus seriously worried, im no dr and not even trying to diagnose myself. my pain is very untolerable my NS released me acted like he didnt care so currently i have no meds to take for the pain besides robaxin 750 mg and it doesnt touch my pain. i just want to know what kind of options my pain could be coming from...what do i need to do? is it wrong or hypochondriatic that i am just a person looking for problems it could be? any advice would be greatly appreciated on what to do...i am not crazy there is something goin on i know it just like i knew with my lower back..help me out guys i need some answers please
thanks, britni

Many of us at 1 point been in your situation and even years later after having surgery some people think its as simple as that and sometimes its not,
Many times they cant find the cause and never means its not there, you just have to push on and find a dr that can confirm the cause, its not worth listening to anyone who dont suffer from a pain condition because some people just talk just to listen to themself talk when they know nothing about it,
But when they find themself in pain they will ask you what you think it might be knowing you been researching about it,
Most drs know people that dont have it just dont understand, not that you have to be a dr to know this, If you know for a fact pain is there you fight with any and every dr to find it,
Best of luck,
L4 L5 disc replacement in 2004=causing nerve damage'Flexicore disc. 2006 fusion same level leaving adr in. Fusion did nothing to releive the nerve pain.Pain clinic=every injection procedure avalable inc, razadamy, ablation, nerve stimulater trial, morphine pump trial all failed. Pain can be described as burning pain in lower spine penetrating in to left buttock, down left leg. Refuse to take lyrica or nuorontin do to its side effect,Leaving me with norco, valume, and flexiril at night.Which these medications only help with the muscle aches and stiffnes does nothing for the nerve pain from the nerve damage sustained from the adr surgery.Coming up nov.19th 2009 Lami, and hardware removal from fusion, for hardware just causing more pain in other areas.Hardware block comfirmed hardware is also causing pain in diferent area aside from the severe nerve pain on left side.Emg showed some posible problem above surgery are at L3 L4.
im just so frusturated...i been reading alot on fibromyalgia..and i have alot of the symptoms not diagnosing myself with that tho. im just looking for answers. i dont know if my surgery could have triggered whatever is goin on.
i am going to be very persistent with this because i know the pain is there, and i cant wait to find out so i can say i told all of you something was wrong. i will keep pushing through till i do find out what is goin on. my dad is the only one not being negative with me because hes had 2 back surgeries in 10 months and he knows how it is to sit and cry with pain, and i have to suck it up and deal with it because of my daughter even though it is so hard. i cant work right now because of this new pain i am having all over my body very achy and tired all the time. the pain is driving me crazy and i am almost at my breaking point with it, i need some relief for the time being. i have been referred to pain management but on the waiting list. i try not to complain about my pain because i dont want to get others in a bad mood. they cant see my pain and think its all in my head and i know its not. this is very hard on me

Almost everyone knows with having surgery scar tisue can form and grow where it can affect the nerves after surgery and often they cant see it on an mri to the degree where they think is causing pain and weakness,
Also no surgery is always a 100% to get rid of all the pain. I am sure with younger people dr,s will want the person even more so to avoid further surgery and keep trying to get the right exercise to work it out.
They know well how much risk can come with surgery especialy if they not even sure what the direct cause is,
Good luck with the pain specialist and hopefully he can help you,

now going to have a mri on my c-spine because my t-spine came back normal. question: what in the world is hydromorphone? i had a drug screen by my regular dr and hydromorphone came back positive ive never heard of it. i was honest with him and told what he was going to find in my system because i had taken some lortab 10 on a couple of my really bad days and this also came back..i know for a fact its a false positive. and i dont know if medications can interfere and make a false positive ive also heard some foods we eat can cause false positive..

Your pain is far from unexplained you have had surgery with diagnosed degenerative disc problems etc,I am glad to see you have another scan booked I hope you get some answers soon.
Have you had any x rays on your L5/S1 to see how things are since your op ?
It is hard to identify pain we are all trying to do the same thing here,is the pain coming from relaxed muscles or have they tightened up like solid and cramped up with tender spots ? muscles can also cause nerve irritation when inflamed.
Pain management can help with pain meds or nerve blocks but this is quite often short term relief to identify the area where pain is coming from some people get on better than others, everyone is different.
I hope you get better soon

no i havent had xrays on L5/S1 because my neurosurgeon acted like he didnt care when i told him i was still in pain. i believe i need xrays because past 2 days both of my legs have had the most awful pain, like my left leg did before surgery and the leg pain reminded me of why i went on and had surgery because here lately i been wishing i hadnt had the surgery but the leg pain is so unbearable. i feel a tightness around my incision area and its started bothering me; the lower part. so my upper back and lower back leg pain severe migraines i just want to scream to the top of my lungs...im in too much pain to be so young

iam currently seeking another neurosurgeon and its such a hard decision after having one surgeon act like he didnt care after surgery when he got his money and the pain i am in now..i dont know which way to turn

...trying to unravel the pain and conditions your body is suffering.
I am considerably older and have the same struggles with friends and family. I have had doctors tell me to become like an expert on my situation..other docs don't even want to hear another opinion from another source.
But it's your health, your pain and noone is going to care as much about pain relief as you. Like most everything else in life..we continue to learn. It's unfortunate to have this sidetrack and time consuming condition for you.
And I'm sorry you don't have the support you deserve.
Some..I think most..people can not understand things as real if they have not experienced them for themselves.
Glad you're here. We get it!
My profile lists my spinal issues and other conditions that I navigate around daily.
Doing my best to be getting around and hanging on to this ride called life!
A lot of people here have had to do the same thing,I think it is all about finding the right specialist who understands the MRI/X ray's many people have been told to go home and put up with it and keep taking the meds, yet another looks at the scans like mine and hey presto suddenly they find all sorts that need treating.
My L5/S1 went well around 10 weeks ago although I do still have leg problems.
I wish you luck this time it's no fun waiting to be seen,a second opinion is always a good idea.
All the best Des
your right savage they dont understand or believe its real till they have experienced it..i am worried i have a one year old daughter and i gota get myself better in order to take care of her like i want to thats the most depressing part most days i dont wanna play with her but i push myself to because shes my daughter and when she takes a nap i just cry while doing housework because it kills me..and yes des every technician reading these mris all read them different one may not see a thing wrong and then you get another one to look over it and bam they find sumthing...i just want my life back that i had 3 years ago, i want to be able to want to play with my daughter and not be in excruciating pain..my family has said oh your too young to be in that much pain hello ive done had back surgery at 20 that should tell you sumthing and just because im young doesnt mean i do not hurt because i do. they have sat and seen me cry with it and they tell me do sumthing to keep your mind off of it but when u have a constant aging pain that dont stop thats hard to do and they dont understand i would love to have their support..

I feel sorry for you people can not see pain and just assume it's the same as everyone gets at times, but hang on in there and find someone to help like an orthopaedic/spinal surgeon.,or a pain specialist,
I struggled for years before getting a second opinion now after surgery feel like I am getting there,I still need neck surgery I am waiting for a date.
I have 5 children an could not take part in their activities so I know what it is like for you.I am worried for you as you need someone who will listen to you within your family or friends, and take this seriously as you have a little daughter who needs looking after and so do you.
Look after yourself

My recommendation would be to see either a pain management doctor or even a rheumatologist, who may be able to look a little further into your symptoms. The problem with surgeons is that they are going to look for something to fix. If they do not see anything that warrants fixing, either on x-ray or MRI, they are going to send you on your merry way, even though you are still in pain. If you are concerned about fibromyalgia, a rheumatologist would be a good place to start. A pain management doctor can hopefully help to get your pain under control, while you are waiting to figure out what is going on. Good luck to you!
