I had a surgery last year MIS TLIF on my L5 / S1 Spondy. The surgery / recovery went well, but after 8 months, my back and leg pain came back, more chronic than before my surgery. The MRI and CT showed that the scar tissues have spread all over L4 / L5 / S1 region. It also showed an enlarged dosal nerve suggesting inflammation, and seemed that scar tissues are surrounding it. Doc wants to remove scar tissue that is causing chronic pain on the back and leg. My toe, foot, and ankle hurt real badly. At times, I can't feel my foot at all. Does anyone know, since the moment you have intermittent loss of feeling to actual foot drop, how long is that?
I don't like the sound of this upcoming surgery, tedious as it sounds, how do you remove all the scar tissues around the nerve without irritating it or worse? Ron mentioned that scar tissues will probably build up again after the surgery. I asked the doc about that, and he said he would put 'something' to prevent that from happening. Anyone know of such thing?
Spondy at L5/S1. Herniated disc L2 to S1, C3/C4. 2007 MIS TLIF L5/S1 with instruments. Diabetic, kidneys failing, TIA in Jan 2008. Fusion bone grow outside of disc space, and scar tissues wrapping my dosal nerve at L5/S1. Moved my surgery from Christmas to beginning of Jan.
Zachback, My doctor also told me that if in 6 months or so the pain doesn't go away in my leg/foot, he would remove the scar tissue. I asked him if it would return, and he said he would wrap the nerve with something so the scarring wouldn't touch it. I'm a little nervous about that too. I would like to know the % of good results with this surgery, since I've never heard of anyone having it done. If your doctor tells you more about your surgery, I'd really be interested in hearing what he's going to do.

Hi CSP,
These doctors always have 'something' but what is it? I tried to search the internet but haven't found a name yet. I will ask my doc the next time I see him. What did your surgeon suggest surgery?
Spondy at L5/S1. Herniated disc L2 to S1, C3/C4. 2007 MIS TLIF L5/S1 with instruments. Diabetic, kidneys failing, TIA in Jan 2008. Fusion bone grow outside of disc space, and scar tissues wrapping my dosal nerve at L5/S1. Moved my surgery from Christmas to beginning of Jan.
My surgeon only suggested surgery if I'm still having pain next June (6 months from when I saw him). Then he said he would wrap the nerve. I, too, looked this up and only found one site talking about Neuro Wrap or something. If no one else had has this done, I'm a little nervous. I'd hate to have the pain worse than it is now. I'm getting a second opinion soon. The new doctor's a spine surgeon, not a neuro surgeon. Just want someone else's take on what could be done. I also want another test done, maybe a cat scan or another mri before embarking on another surgery. I'm just very skeptical of anything at this point, being that so many people get worse with more surg.
