Tingling, hot/cold, etc

Hi, Everybody, I'm new here and would just like to ask if anyone has found any treatments particularly effective or if they've had a lumbar disc decompression/microdiscectomy/laminectomy and how it went as I have been told that I may have a herniated/slipped disc.

I am 20 years old and started with this back problem when I was 17 and now I can't work because of this pain.

Thanks for reading my post.

Hi Nyla,

Well, my husband had a herniated disc L5/S1 and had a disectomy 7 mo's ago and his operation was successful with instant relief from that nasty sciatic nerve. (He has issues with another disk but that is unrelated to the L5). Before considering surgery I would exhaust all other options. Have you had any epiduals? Pain Packs? PT?

I have had some PT which I found to be of no relief, in fact it made the pain worse. I have found resting a much better option for my pain at the moment.

I have been told there are epidurals and nerve blocks available but haven't been referred for one yet.

I have heard of rhizotomy but haven't been told about it and am not sure if this would be effective.

I have also considered and will ask my Physiotherapist for a TENS machine as I have heard these to be effective for pain relief.

I haven't been referred to a consultant yet, even though my GP has now after three years of saying my bad back was 'normal'. I have been referred to a Physiotherapist Practitioner Specialist on behalf of my consultant (who I haven't even met yet) and don't understand why I keep going round in circles, only seeing loads of different physios rather than a consultant after three years of persistant problems.

By the way I am from the UK just in case you were wondering. Smile

Hi Nyla,

I would go to a good neosurgeon and have him/her schedule a MRI. You really need to know what is causing the pain. The epidurals do work for so many people depending on the herniation.

I hope this helps. Smile

Sorry. I forgot to tell you I have had an MRI and am awaiting the results.

No problem

Nyla,

I would just sit still and wait until you get the results from your MRI. Hopefully you do not have to wait to long. But remember always get a second or even a third opinion!

Thanks for your advice,

Thanks for your advice, Smurf. Smile

I should get the results of my MRI by either next week or the week after the hospital has told me which isn't too bad.

Yeah, I will get at least two opinions if possible, hopefully see a consultant even if they (hospital or physio) don't let me see one as I think after having this for three years it needs investigating and putting right as I have actually read that it is unusual for young people to have back problems like this.
