my two teenagers were just diagnosed with scoliosis :(

I am recovering from acdf surgery. I had two levels done 5 weeks ago and I brought my 14 year old and 13 year old to the doctor for their physicals and now I have to bring them to a specialist. They both have slight curves in their spines. I just want to cry! Sad

_____________

Waiting at a light one night and a drunk driver slammed into the back of my car. She has changed my life. I'm left with two herninated disks at C4 and C5 and limp from the accident. My daughter fractured her arm. I was trying to finish my masters and I feel like she took my life from me. Docs say from this I have arthritis and DDD. It's not getting better and seems to be worse as time does by.

nope

No Pete, they are not in pain. My son does complain at times that his back hurts. I sat there in shock! I have three children. My 11 year old is OK. They did fine last year. It's minor but they need to see a specialist. I just don't want them to be in the pain I'm in. I'm just about 5 weeks post op and still in pain. I'm doing too much. I go off Perocet and two days later I'm in agony. I only take two or three a day and then taper off, but then when completely off, I have a lot of pain. Docs giving me ten more days and then I must go back to my PM doctor. I had surgery to try to get rid of my PM doc...lol! I have to laugh, if not I'll cry.

Thanks!

Cindy

I share your shock

Although I cannot related to the personal shock I am pleased they are not in pain. I hope that the specialist can find the underlying cause which will rectify itself or be treatable.

Showing my age but recall 35 years ago school bags changed from ones carried in one hand to back pack type because the load being carried mainly by the predominate stronger arm (right if right handed) was impacting the persons structural frame (and had friends where one shoulder that was clearly lower than the other)!

I truely hope that the health screening in your childrens case will be a blessing.

Kindest regards Big Hug Big Hug

Thank you!

You are all so wonderful! I'll let you know how they do. I just don't want them to ever feel the pain I feel. I was diagnosed with it a few months ago. My cervical spine was the priority since it was a mess. I have lower back but to hear your young children have this is very upsetting. I know it's minor but it still made me sad. I'm better today and thankful to you guys for you concern, help and support.

Do they not have the spine

Do they not have the spine check in their schools? I'm only 22 myself but I was diagnosed at 15 although I've had it for longer. My school did not have the check, either. Good to hear it's only minor and hopefully they are still young enough to where if they do need any treatment it can be treated with a brace over the next year or so. I was too old for the brace when they finally caught mine and my curves were too significant. Best of luck.

scoliosis checks

I'm sorry to hear of your problem. Thankfully your kids are not in pain all the time. Here in Nj all schools have a scoliosis check, I think around third grade. Thats a good thing, I don't know about other parts of the Country.
Of course you don't want your kids to be in pain! As for yourself, maybe reconsider stopping the percs for a time and then suffering. Could you possibly try to find a "happy medium" so that you don't crash and suffer? Don't forget you have to take care of yourself so you can then take care of your family.

If your children will have

If your children will have back pain you must go to doctor urgently.

I had scoliosis in the past and I remember I wear special kit to straighten my back.

I'm new to the life of

I'm new to the life of Scoliosis so excuse me. I was just wondering why everyone keeps asking if your children are in pain. The reason I'm asking is because the supposed great doctor we seen said there IS NO pain with scoliosis. BUT this is the same Dr. that said my daughter's curvature would not get worse either because she is done growing supposedly. Had x-rays in Jan when we discovered she had Scoliosis and they ordered more in March and there was already a slight change. Think our expert is a quack!!

Yoga for scoliosis

Hi Cindy,

Don't despair. There are many, many people with scoliosis and live very normal, pain free lives. Have you tried looking for specialist yoga teachers for yourself and your children? Yoga for scoliosis is very effective, because when done correctly it's not only great for your overall health, it can stop further development of the scoliosis, and because your children are still young, it may even help reverse the curvature. Edited Good luck.

Don't wait to see the specialist

Please don't wait. My nephew was diagnosed by his family doctor around 12. They took him to the ortho once or twice. THen for god only knows what reason they let it go!! At 17 he had to have rods put in to support his spine.

This may be an extreme case but it just shows how serious this silent problem can be. He never had any pain. And all that time his spine was twisting like a pretzel.

So please find a way to get them to the specialist.

Lots of teenagers have

Lots of teenagers have surgery to have rods inserted. My surgeon does a couple every week plus at least one adult case. If this is required, and it may not, teenagers recover very quickly from the surgery and go on to live normal lives.

On the other hand, they may be like me, diagnosed at 13 and didn't require surgery until almost 58. Scoliosis differs a lot from one person to another.

You need a scoliosis surgeon rather than an orthopedic surgeon. Orthopedic surgeons may do back surgery, but unless they specialise in scoliosis, don't let them near your kids.
