I had scoliosis surgery to correct a 56 degree curve in 1980 - Harrington Rods, Boston Jacket - and have had no significant pain related to it since then. At the time, I was told certain activities were restricted - horseback riding, skiing, motorcycling - but was never told if these were permanent restrictions. Can I engage in those activities now?
PS I should add I was 12 when I had the surgery - it had progressed from a 36 to a 56 degree curve in 6 months. I stopped growing at 14 and didn't have to wear a brace after that.
Welcome to Spine Health. Wow you have been through a lot! The safest thing to do would be to ask spine specialist. Hopefully the specialist would have images taken of your spine, do a hands on diagnostic examination and then make recommendations and answer your questions based on his/her findings.
The members of Spine Health are patients and family members of patients. The only thing we can really offer is support and sharing of our own experiences.
Have you talked to any doctors recently or been examined by any recently?
Once again I'd like to welcome you to Spine Health.

Welcome to the forum! I can't give you any answers but as haglandc above has said, it's really worth a visit to a surgeon specialising in scoliosis and asking what your current restrictions are, if any. Sounds like you are one of the Harrington success stories! Good luck.

Curve corrected from 68 degrees to 22 and spine de-rotated.
Thanks! I'll have to do that. I didn't know about the Harrington horror stories until recently and am a little worried for the future - but so far so good! Am hoping to be able to do some of what I couldn't before. Thanks for your responses!
