Spring vs foam?

I'm going to be buying a new mattress in the next couple of days and my physio told me to look out for a pocket spring mattress (so far I've been on a silentnight miracoil mattress but feel I need something better). I've looked at some pocket spring mattresses and they're very comfy, and the one I was thinking of purchasing also has memory foam on top. Very comfortable and supportive.

On the other hand, the salesman at the bed shop I was in has been telling me about how full foam mattresses (so, memory foam on top of reflex foam) are the way forward, especially on the continent, as they have far superior pressure relieving qualities, as springs always want to go back to their original shape so the pressure is upwards, whereas foam mattresses are the opposite. I have tried some full foam mattresses, the brand being Jaritex, and I think they are very comfortable. Unusual, but comfortable.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with ufll foam mattresses and their backs, and what their thoughts are on them? Would I be better off going for springs?

Thanks

Hi Harmonic Minor

I bought the 6" foam and 5" memory foam mattress and have it on top of the old bottom part of the bed which is mostly wood. It's very comfortable for me. I can't imagine going back to the old mattress I had. They have the memory foam toppers also I hear are good too. Good luck with your decision. Charry

my advice

i bought a top of the range tempur bed as soon as i could afford it .and was disappointed with it so was my wife {her back is good] the problem with full memory foam is ..its too hard to turn over in the night and i found that my back was worse on it .we also have a cheap sprung mattress on our spare bed so we bought a memory foam overlay ...what a diference.it was more comfy than the tempur bed at a tenth of the cost ...so we decided to purchase a pair of top of the range electric adjustable beds with a sprung and memory foam combination mattress on each bed .it si fantastic my wife can sleep for 12 hours on it with out any fatigue .unfortunately i still wake after 3 hours with back ache ..but that's just my bad back ..i would recommend memory foam and sprung combination over memory foam forget just springs .if you are in the uk visit sleep masters .the velda electrical bed is fantastic ..velda are available worldwide the make very high quality beds

Mattresses!!

Hi,
I have to agree with straker about memory foam mattrasses. I had no luck with mine also. So I was on a predicament. I need an adjustable, or a lot of pillows to prop me up, and they recommend a foam or a latex mattress for them. So I looked at latex. I did a lot of resreach on the net, and went to a local store to see what one was. I found them to be a very nice mattress, and they last for a very long time (average about 20yrs of use). They have 2 down sides, 1 is they are heavy, and the other is they are expensive.

They come in all different types of firmness. I went with a plush top, and it wonderful. It gives just enough to be soft, but then hits the firm layer so you don't sink in so far that you can't get out. Another good reason the plush top is good, it doesn't have to be flipped, but if you need it firmer, you can use the other side. But with everything, you need to be careful. There are some latex mattresses out there, and I ran acrossed one, that is terrible. So be careful. To know if it's a good mattress, make sure the mattress weight is heavy.

If you have any questions, you can just pm me.

I love love love love love

I love love love love love my memory foam mattress. I've had spring mattresses all my life and they were hell on my back. We got a "MiForma" mattress, they only carry them at Back To Bed stores. It's way cheaper than the tempurpedics and it's eco friendly (made with soy & bamboo!). I just absolutely love it, it's helped my back a lot.

Ditto.... I have the 4" foam

Ditto....

I have the 4" foam topper over my regular spring coil and I love love love it. I used to have the 2 " foam but gave it to my daughter when I moved back upstairs to my king bed and upgraded to the 4" foam (after the last surgery).

I had an small accident recently invloving a large bottle of water and had to remove the foam topper (for drying) and sleep on the regular mattress... It was hard enough to move can't imagine having the full mattress.

Sleeping on my plain mattress was like sleeping on a box of rocks. Really!

Springs not all the same..

We've been trying mattresses lately. We have a sleep number and it is useless for my back. Also have a very firm mattress with traditional coils in the guest room. This is where we are sleeping now.

The mattress we are using is a traditional style, Amish frame, interlocking coils, pillow top. The newer mattresses we are looking at use individual coils. Heavier coils by the edge with side bolster. This stops the mattress edge from rolling down when you get up. That was kinda nice. The mattress top is layered foam. Pretty comfortable. I actually liked the medium one over the firm. Planning on going back and laying on one for a good 30 minutes or more. At the price these things cost I'm taking my time.

We tried the tempurpedic and neither of us liked it. I guess to each his own. It's becoming an adventure now Wink

Neither...

I sleep on an air mattress. It's the only mattress that's ever enabled me to sleep (at least some of the time) without low back pain. I thought I wanted a memory foam mattress--until I laid down on one at the mattress store a few weeks ago. Yikes! My back started to hurt within 10 seconds! I slept fairly well on a medium-firmness mattress in a motel recently, but when I got up in the morning I could hardly walk for the pain. I'm sticking with my air mattress. Smile

Still deciding

We've have a temperpedic for 5 years. Long before my surgery. I swear that after we got used it, both hubby and I were able to wake up in the morning and put socks on and go down stairs without making "ouch" noises.

Then I hurt myself and secretly blamed my matress b/c that's where my morning stretch pushed me to the ER.

After surgery 1, I refused to sleep in bed but that was a mistake. While the recliner was comfy, it wasn't good. I then started in a regular spring matress b/c I just thought it was good.

After this surgery I am good in the memory foam temper. My question is really about if they are good for me or not. I think for side sleeping they are b/c my hip gets supported and it forms to my body. I'm still not convinced it is good for back sleeping.

I'm feeling better this time. Turning is an issue but I wake my husband up and he helps me roll as needed. He's gotten good, he just holds his arm up while sleeping and I can use it like a hospital bed on the one side. Then the other side, I use the nightstand to pull me.

I like our mattress but still trying to understand if it is really good for me or not.

I have a sleep #bed. I know

I have a sleep #bed. I know they are really expensive but I got mine from someone that used it once and didn't like it. So I got a deal on it. I love this bed. Have had it for 3 years now. When I stay over at a family members house their regular mattresses kill my back.

When I went shopping for a new mattress the store had a queen sized temperpedic bed on display and I was talked into trying it for a few minutes. I laid down and, truthfully, at first I thought it was amazing... then I tried to move Laughing I had to wait for my brother to come back and help me up because I couldn't turn over nor could I figure a way to slide off the bed, hehehe... They may be awesome for some folks but for me it was a no go!

I thought about a sleep number bed but I didn't know anyone with it and I'd want to try it first... the idea of being able to adjust it sounds nice tho Smile

I ended up buying a Serta Perfect Sleeper "Shining Night" which seems to be a very firm bed with a heavy duty pillow top...the firm keeps my back from aching and the pillowtop lets the rest of me be comfy- almost 4 years later and I'm still very happy with my bed!

Whatever you do, take the time to lay/roll/turn over, etc. Lay there for 30 minutes if you can to get an idea of how you feel.

Hope you can find a comfy resting place!

i have said before

a good high quality sprung AND memory foam mattress works better than spring OR memory foam .like the above post i too have the tempur bed and i found it impossible to get off without help .i should imaging that tempurs electrical adjustable versions would be ok but extremely expensive .we went for the spring and foam on an electrical adjustable base from a company called VELDA half the price of tempur and in my opinion better !
