Please help need advice

Diagnosed with Leftr lateral L5-S1 sequestered disc in June 2009 following lower back pain and severe left hip pain, moderate ankle pain accompanied by left leg weakness( had to drag leg), numbness to left big toe. After 4 months off work and no treatment, I can now feel my big toe and weakness slightly better. I still have moderate hip pain and lower back discomfort but not using any pain killers.
After all this time I now have appointment to have spinal injection to relieve pain. I intially did not want any procedure done. I have also started physiotherapy.
Should I have the spinal injections or should I continue with no treatment with the hope that it will resolve naturally and if so how long is this likely to take.I have read a lot of literature about this but wants information from people who have experienced this.

You and I have a similar

You and I have a similar issue. I'm not sequestered, but very extruded and similar leg weakness (useless) and pain.

I had my first (and only) injection 10 days ago. Did not help. I am actually in more pain right now than when I went in. They are going to want to do another injection. My other doctors' opinions involve microdiscectomy so that is probably going to be my end result and probably will be yours also.

Welcome to the board ~

Sometimes people have really remarkable results from a steroid injection. If you were one of them, it would help to hasten your healing.

The purpose of the spinal injection is to hopefully reduce inflammation, which helps reduce pain so that the patient is able to partake of physical therapy or exercise in a way that is not currently possible due to pain.

Here is a link to a little video of ESI:

and some information:

I guess my feeling is that it wouldn't hurt anything to have an injection, and if it happens to work for you, it would speed up your healing.

Recap

Hello all,
I still have appointment for facet injection next month but feels much better. I have been doing physio + yoga and weakness and pain subsiding significantly. I am hoping for the best and feel will not need the injection if things continue this way.

slow and steady --

That's good news. Just remember to take it slow and easy...you don't want to undo the progress you are making.
