Unsuccessful Facetectomy

Hi Listers
I would like to hear from anyone who has had a 'facetectomy'. I had one 4 months ago and together with an infection I got from the anti biotics that they gave me in the hospital, had about a month free of pain. Now I cannot stand or walk for more than ten minutes without the numbness coming on.
I have bought an exercise bike and bike everyday for 20 minutes that's all I can do without feeling sick.
I would like to hear from anyone who knows where to go from here. My family doctor said there is no point in returning to the surgeon who will only offer yet another operation.
Thanks so much. Shouav

hi shouav

boy you've been thru a lot!
my only suggestion is that it might be a good idea to have a neurologist check you out. i would think that it might be good to get mri or ct scan of the area. i had an infection from a back surgery and it took a good 6 months before my strength returned. however you said you had no pain for a month. were you on steroids at that time? hopefully a scan will show what's going on. if in fact there is some instability the neurologist can make the suggestion of seeing surgeon.

Actually I had gone to a neurologist before I was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis. In fact I went to two, they both thought I had neopathy. I had a CT (cant have an MRI because I have metal in my stomack from a Gaul Bladder op). When I went to follow up after the op the surgeon just laughed off the infection, which was caused by the antibiotics that they had given me after the operation. I was just wondering if anyone had anything to suggest regards to living with the situation. Thanks for your comments. Shouav

No, I have not. When I asked my GP if I should go back to the surgeon he didn't see the point. He said: What will they do another operation? I did try and email the surgeon, but he didnt answer me. Not sure if it's worth trying again. Sharon

hi again

it's still early in the game to do anything but wait and see. it takes a long time to get your strength back after surgery and an infection. i had infection from spine surgery and it took a year to mend completely. I still don't know why another dr. other than surgeon can't order a ct scan. a comparison could be made to the one before the surgery.
best of luck,
pete
