massage to knead out knots after stressful times?

I have never had a massage before and was curious was it something worthwhile.
My back was in a poor way for many many months and I never did anything about it but recently I'm doing everything I can think of. (stretches, exercises, new pillow, standing with straight posture, computer screen up high).

One thing I am certain of is I probably carry alot of residual stress. I know nothing about it but remember a masseuse showing me and some of my friends the differences in the muscles on peoples necks and backs due to stress.
So I'm thinking now, based on that, from the times that I was stressed the muscles in my back could be in knots, with nothing ever being done about it until recently(my stretches).
I do remember the muscles in my back tightening up to incredible levels before. Last time would be a few months back.
Should I get a massage? Are these knots still there? Must it be a deep tissue massage or does it matter. Should someone go twice or 4 times or more?
As I said I know nothing so want to know is getting a massage for this worth my time or would it just be a waste?
These other massages just seem wishy washy(swedish) or too much(like the thai with its stretching out limbs).

massage is great

hi!! massage is great for tight and sore muscles..it is a great way to work those knots out of there.. massage is something you have to work into so i would not schedule alot at first but start with 1 or 2.. if you are currently under the care of a doctor for your pain, it might be best to speak to him about massage.. it is being used more and more today in the care of back pain.. good luck with your pain problems!! That's great. I think I'll

That's great. I think I'll try one. How important is it for the massage to be a deep tissue one though? I'm looking at whats available and there are plenty of thai and swedish. Since I'm hoping to get knots kneaded out should I only look at deep tissue?

I get a lot of knots in my

I get a lot of knots in my back and always find that deep tissue massages leave me wanting yet another one a day or 2 later, which I obviously can't afford. When I was at the chiropractor he suggested I get this back massager called EDITED It really helps me for those in between massage times, and you don't need someone else to do it to you so you can use it whenever you want. I really like it and find it helps out a lot. Their website has a bunch of details on it.URL removed, solicitation not permitted

I also really loved that they take paypal, way more secure than a lot of other places.

Hope this helped a bit! Smile
