4 level lumbar fusion

I am scheduled for a 4 level posterolateral lumbar fusion (L2-S1) in 3 weeks. I would LOVE to hear from someone who has had this surgery. I have dealt with progressive chronic pain for about 10 years. My pain management doctor performed a discogram at the request of the orthopedic surgeon. The pain management doc had consistently recommended against surgery before he did the discogram. He was suggesting that I have a pain pump instead. After the discogram, he advised that I have the surgery as did the orthopedic surgeon. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, terried

Hi Terrified

I would get a 2nd opinion an Orthopedic Surgeon of a NeuroSurgeon. Take care. Charry

Me, too!

Hi. I can appreciate your message, as I am scheduled to have what sounds like the same operation over the same levels, close to the same time (2-19-09 for me). This will be my third back suregery, but my first (& hopefully last!) fusion. Please let me know if you'd like to chat off of the message board. Regardless, I wish you a successful surgery & a speedy recovery! CSM

Don't Rush into a Decision ~

I agree. I would definitely get at least another opinion with a spinal specialist, either an orthopedic spinal specialist or a neurosurgeon who only sees spinal patients.

You don't mention what your problems are, but it is always appropriate to get several opinions before having such a BIG surgery.

I dealt with sciatic pain and stenosis for over 3 years before finally deciding on a surgeon. I consulted with 8 different specialists (neurosurgeons, orthopedic spinal surgeons and a physiatrist)hoping to discover a newer procedure than fusion. I was struck by the variations in treatment. The majority recommended a one level fusion, and the 2 neurosurgeons were going to do up to a 5 level fusion.

I ended up with a one level fusion. My thinking was less is better. I can always do more down the road, but you can never go back!!

Please do not make a decision too quickly unless there is an emergency situation.

Your surgery

Hello csmayer,

I am so happy to meet someone who is having surgery similar to mine. What previous surgeries did you have? Are you having a fusion now because the previous surgeries failed? I have done a fair amount of investigating into various procedures, but I was advised that the lesser invasive procedures would take care of leg pain, but not back pain. Anyway, I'd love to hear about your back history and the info you have obtained through your experiences.
