6 wks ACDF C3-7 itching hands?

I did not have itching hands prior to surgery. Now I have this in both hands. It is occuring all the time non stop. I am a nurse and work surgery. All normal other stuff has been ruled out like allergic causes. Has anyone else had this either before or after surgery? I have instruments inside and am wondering if I am allergic to them or if this is just a inflamatory process?
Thanks.

hi i had a fusion in the lumbar area and I also had this uncontrollable itch on both hands (the back of my hands) and if you scratch it left little bumps like white heads, they checked everything too and summed it up to stress hives, and every now and then they still come back,I dont think im stress but the mind can make the body do strange things...
I wish it would make me quit eating so i
can get back to my old weight LOL

first, welcome to spine-health

Itching can be a sign of nerve healing. Did you have any radiculopathy or any symptoms in your hands prior to surgery? This may explain the itching.

I still have itching that drives me absolutely nuts on two of my fingers on my right hand. I've just been told it is part of the nerves healing. Hasn't seemed to change for a long time now, so maybe I'll always have this.

If it isn't this, I have no other ideas.

At 6 weeks post op you are probably still having a lot of varying symptoms. Remember to still take it easy for a bit and let yourself heal. I hope to read more of your story on the boards. Again, welcome to spine-health.

itching hands thanks Cindy and Mgarret for thoughts

I only had tingling hands prior to surgery but never hands that itched. I now have feet and hands that are itching. I had a physical therapist tell me over the weekend that he thought perhaps I had scar tissue forming around nerves. Oh darn that would be disasterous. I am calling my surgeon tomorrow to see what he can suggest to open up the pathways such as physical therapy. I sure don't want to be worse off than I was prior to the surgery. I found heat makes me itch worse and cold helps. Anyone else have suggestions? I am so tired the itching is non stop and it has been going for 4 days now.

Hi ajelinda: I know you said

Hi ajelinda:

I know you said that allergies had been ruled out...does that include Sulfa drugs? Years ago I had a reaction to Sulfa drugs and my hands itched. Just a thought. I hope you can find some relief.

thanks Ellen H: Here's more history on my pre surgery

I'm not on any Sulfa, but thanks for the suggestion. I think the pain was easier to deal with. This is torture. I think itching would be a bad way to go sort of like being tickled to death. LOL
I would hate to think I had a 4 level c-3 c7 fusion only to end up worse off than I started. I had billateral muscle spasms in my traps, shoulders and arms, with electical pain running down both arms into both hands. I hads some numbness in my fingers. I had weakness in both hands. I waited for 2 1/2 yrs and tried all kinds of alternative treatments before biting the bullet and going for the surgery. Now I am having doubt. I read so many of you have had multiple surgeries. Does this never end?

I've had itching in my feet

I've had itching in my feet about the last week. It comes and goes. I keep thinking it's from the nerve healing since I am feeling better each day. It's not intense though and is only in the areas where I have had pain and numbness from the nerve problems.

Hopefully for you it's just the nerve healing. I hope you find some relief soon.

itchy, swollen, red hands & thighs

In the fall after surgery, when the weather was getting colder, my hands & thighs would get itchy. It seemed to be triggered by being out in the cold for too long and not bundled up well enough. My thighs and hands would begin itching, so I'd get inside the house to warm up. This would go on for at least an hour. My hands would also get puffy and red. I never found any way of helping except to get out of the cold as soon as I felt it starting again. It doesn't happen any more....but then again...its summer. Thinking

I had ACDF surgery 7 weeks

I had ACDF surgery 7 weeks ago & I though I was losing my mind when I started itching. I'm so glad I looked it up & found these posts. I'm sorry others are having these problems but it makes me feel better to know I'm not going crazy. About 3-4 weeks post surgery my hands started itching really bad & I had those little white bumps too, then it started happening to my arms, feet, the back of my neck & head. I noticed your post was from a year or so ago, how are you today? Does the itching ever end??

Itching C4-5 - Neck and Upper Arms

Although I have not had any kind of cervical surgery, I had a hot-tub cover blow on my head, while sitting in a hot-tub, 15 years ago. An x-ray at the time showed no problems. Over the last 8 years I have had itching, progressively getting worse over the C4-5 dermatome. A x-ray in 2008 showed degenerative changes at the apophyseal joints of C4-5 on the left. My internist started me a Gabapentin 100mg in the morning and 200mg at night to suppress the itching. This worked for about 8 months but now I am itching on the medication. It wakes me up at night and the more I scratch the worse the itching gets. I just went for an MRI and will hopefully find the reason my itching is getting worse. My MD believes the itching is a type of cervical pain from irritation of the nerve. I am thinking about acupuncture and cervical traction as possible options in the future to stop the itching. Anyone have similar circumstances with relief of itching?
