Anterior L5 S1 Fusion

On 12/16/08 I will have a L5 S1 anterior fusion. I'm 6' 187 and in good shape. How long can I expect to be in the hospital? potential time out of work?

Welcome...

Every NS is different, as is every person. Make a list of questions to ask when you go to your next visit, that way you'll have a better idea of what to expect. Best of luck to you! Keep us posted! I believe there is a post on here of things to do before surgery, like as is toilet seat riser, have help at home for awhile, things at arma reach. Its a very detailed list and very helpful, I just cant think right now where its located!! lol.... Im sure someone can probably remember better than I. Again, good luck with your upcoming surgery!

anterior fusion

Evil I have had an anterior fusion L1-L5. Everyone is different of course but I was off work for 3 weeks. I was in the hospital 5 days. I am a very active person and competitive athlete. Be prepared to have difficulty sitting up at first and even walking with a walker. Every day gets easier. You will want to prepare your home and have things at arms reach. I had a grabber which helped a lot for picking things up off the floor and a long handled shoe horn is also helpful. I found the one with the spring to be the easiest to use. Some people get a device to help them put on socks but I went without or had someone help me. Elastic waist pants are also good, I wore a lot of sweat pants. I had a safety bar put on my bathtub but it is a jacuzzi tub which is high and I am short. Just try and think ahead of the things that you do daily and make sure they are in reach. I had to get a small table to put the cat food on because I couldn't bend over to feed them. Good luck!!
