Cervical Surgery fusion c3 thru c7

Hello, just looking for a little info. I had c3 thru c7 fusion. Degenerative disc disease, terrible migranes, arm and back pain. They removed the discs and cut out a very large amount of bone spurs that were pressing on the nerves. Also, my neck had a bad reverse curve to it which the surgion used shims and plates and screws to correct. It has been 8 weeks since I had this done. My question is has anyone had something close to this and how long until you felt better? I am up and about, driving and doing P.T.
Can anyone shed any light on this, and I am only 40 so I am worried about the future.
Thanks, Jay.
P.S. I have dealt with this four many years and was involved in an accident that pushed it over the top.

Welcome to Spine Health. I don't have a fusion but have gone through several posterior c-spine surgeries and I must say, they were uncomfortable (with a capital UNCOMFORTABLE). If you are driving and doing PT at 8 weeks, you seem to be doing awesome.

40 is just the beginning of the best part of your life. Enjoy the ride!

Jay

Jay, I am a 39 years old, and I am fighting with horrible neck pain, stiffness and numbness. I had an accident many years ago that didn't seem to hurt my neck too bad, but it's showing it's ugly self a lot later on. I was wondering if before you had your surgery if you had gone through all of the epidural steroid injections, facet injections and Radio Frequency treatments? Did your neck feel like it was unstable, like it popped to whichever side you pushed on it?
The reason I ask, is because I am starting to get a bit desperate and I'm wondering if my treatment needs to have a surgeon involved? What made you finally decide surgery was right? Does any of this sound familiar?
Thanks!

Kelly, You sound like you

Kelly,
You sound like you could have written the book for what happened to me. I too was involved in an auto accident several years ago. I have had terrible neck pain, stiffness, numbness and migraine headaches. I had tried all of the injections and differant kinds of therapy.
I was on anti- seizure medications to slow down the nerve impulses as well as pain medications.
Last October I was rear ended and that just did me in. I lived in pain and had a non stop headache every day. I finally decided that it could not be any worse after surgery than what I was living with.
I will tell you in my case I wish I would have decided to do the surgery years ago. I still have some pain, but most of it is recovery pain from surgery. I do not have any more pain or numbness in my arms or shoulders. The headaches are few and far between and I can take medication and they go away. One bonus is is that I am an inch taller because of the shims they put in my neck.
I know each person is differant, but I can only hope that if you decide to do surgery it will work as well for you.
Do you have four levels that are bad? I had degenerative disc disease and a forward curve in my neck. Also, the surgeon quit counting the bone spurs he cut out.
Let me know what you decide and I will try to help you any way I can. I can tell you that I am a much happier person, husband and father. Good luck with everything, Jay.
