Muscle spasms and nerve pain

I am 8 days post op from a microdiscectomy to relieve a lumbar herniated disc. Prior to surgery I had terrible sciatic pain from my buttocks down through my calf and left foot.
Immediately after surgery the pain was gone completely. For the past 4 days I have had excruciating nerve pain and muscle spasms in my left leg again. It lasts all day if I walk at all. The only relief comes from laying down.
Has anyone else experienced this and is this part of the normal healing process?
Would love to hear from anyone that is experiencing this.

Muscle Spasms & nerve pain

Hi. After my fusion I had nerve pain in my left leg in locations I hadn't had before. Contact your doctor. For me, a round of prednisone relieved that pain within a few days. I hope it's nothing more than that for you as well!

I know that walking is

I know that walking is supposed to help with the healing process, but honestly, I can barely walk out to get the mail and newspaper without having to lay down once the pain hits. Mornings are usually the best for me but after that it just seems to get worse the more I am on my feet.

Give yourself a break. Today

Give yourself a break. Today you walk to get the mail and newspaper. In a few days you'll be able to walk farther. Walk within your home. If you overdo activity, it can set you back, so listen to your body. As with you, morning is always the best time for me. Pain is debilitating.

I hope you feel better soon.

Swelling

I have had similar issues after surgery.... at first pain would be gone, then it would return. My surgeon told me it was usually swelling pressing on nerves etc.and once the swelling went down the pain would too, but to expect it to take awhile, that was part of healing. So far that has been my experience. And I found ice helped.

Muscle Relaxers

At 12 days post op now and just started to take Flexeril for muscle spasms. At least it feels like spasms that really bring on the pain. Seems to help a little with the nerve pain. Has anyone else taken this to relieve the pain some and if so, how long did you take them until pain seemed to subside?

Flexeril

Flexeril is a muscle relaxer and not really for pain or nerve pain. However, if it relaxes your muscles enough I suppose it could help with the pain. I took Flexeril for years and it was about as effective for me as taking a Tic Tac. My doctor switched me to Soma and I really started to have relief.

post surgery pain

I live in Australia, its so awful to read about others suffering this kind of pain. my doctors have said it takes six months to a couple of years for the spine to settle after spinal surgery the more complex the surgery the longer it will take to improve, spinal nerves are easily damaged, take time to heal and give off all sorts of bizarre sensations all over the body. Not over doing is good advice and listening to the body. If spinal nerves are damaged or you have had other treatments or investigations you may look into arachnoiditis and see if that fits your picture. ive had five major spinal surgeries, three myelograms and a dozen epidural injections was diagnosed with severe adhesive arachnoiditis 1983 and every scan since. Its been a nightmare experience with non ending pain. I was good after each op then weeks later so much worse..it was adhesive arachnoiditis made worse with every epidural myelogram and surgery.

Muscle spasms

I'm three weeks post op for L5- S1 fusion. I was in rehab for six days after 4 days in the hospital and based on that I think you need both pain meds and a muscle relaxer. I was given Flexeril which worked well at night however if you are male and have enlarged prostate it may cause some difficulty. My Surgeon has just given me Robaxin instead. I don't have enough experience yet to say how it works. I walk but I also get pain sometimes. My doc said it takes about 3 months to heal and get the fusion.

Flexeril

Happy Fourth of July to everyone !
I am 2 weeks post op today and have been taking flexeril for about 4 days now. It seems to maybe help a little. I am only taking 800 mg Ibuprofen and over the counter extra strength Tylenol with it. I have been unable to take my prescription pain meds due to them making me sick.
I finally left my house for the first time yesterday to visit some friends for a few hours. It felt good to get out of the house but was pretty sore last night. Feel pretty good this morning but trying to take it easy today.
I am praying that maybe I'm rounding a corner? I'm still a little nervous about returning to work and know that right now I could never last the whole day. I work in an office and sit at my computer all day. My post op appt isn't for another 3 weeks so I am hoping things continue to improve over the next 3 weeks.
I have heard the first 2 weeks can be the worst.
Has anyone experienced a great deal of relief after the first few tough weeks?

Setback after 2 weeks

After finally getting some relief after 2 weeks of pain I have now suffered a setback.
I was feeling pretty good on Friday and was walking in my front door after sitting on my porch. Because I haven't been able to walk much my left leg has gotten very weak. When stepping up the step to the house I rolled my left ankle which jolted my whole left side. I pray I didn't do something to my back. Since then I have had excruciating sciatic pain again. Starts from my left buttock down my thigh and calf into my foot. I basically have been laying in bed since then. Other than trying to get a shower and using the restroom I'm really unable to walk much on that leg.
I have a call into the nurse.
I'm not sure what to do. Is laying so much harming the healing process worse or should I try and get up and walk through the pain?
I am so upset and tired of this whole thing. This has been a heck of a long 2 1/2 weeks.
I thought for sure I'd be feeling better by now. I guess I'm second guessing the microdiskectomy I had on June 21st.
Feeling so discouraged.
