Thigh pain after l4-l5 plif

I had a spinal fusion a week ago and both of my thighs hurt mostly the top of them. Has anyone experienced this. This is a new pain I've never had prior to surgery. They also feel week when I walk or get out of bed. I don't rember this with my first fusion 3 years ago. The doctor didn't seem to concern but i am. Thanks Jen

Welcome to the board ~

Doctors are hardly ever concerned at this point after surgery. There are a number of reasons for new pain.

It may be something as simple as athe way you were positioned on the operating room table. It was explained to me that even though they pad you and are careful, the patient is put into some rather awkward positions during fusion, and sometimes a nerve will be slightly compressed for awhile during the procedure. It can be the femoral nerve or another one...if you've ever fallen asleep with your leg propped on a coffee table and awakened to find that you can't walk on the leg for awhile, it is the same sort of situation. It may take awhile, but the pain will eventually go away.

Your body goes through a lot of trauma during a fusion. It is a very physical surgery and it takes a toll. You are still very early in the recovery process. Chances are, things will not unfold exactly as they did before....some things may take longer to resolve, others less.

I hope the thigh pain resolves for you soon...and that you will have an uneventful recovery.

thigh pain

I remember having extreme thigh pain after my L4/5 fusion for a few weeks after, it would keep me up at night. It did eventualy settle down, hope that helps.

thigh pain post lumbar fusion surgery

I had a single level fusion of L4 and L5 on July 31, 2009. I'm in the last 2 weeks of my leave going back to work the first week in November. I'm so discouraged because the pain and burning I have had in my thighs post op is still as bad as it was and I'm unable to sleep very well. Also, the pain and burning that I had before the surgery has gradually returned. I was optimistic right after surgery because all I felt was numbness in my feet but now the pain is coming back. I was in pain management therapy for 31/2 years before this fusion and it appears like I may have to see them again.

Has anyone here had an implantable peripheral nerve stimulator after having fusion surgery? I was already pre-authorized to have one implanted, but chose the fusion surgery first because it made more sense.

Thanks,

Rhonda

I had the same thing!!

Is your pain like a burning nerve pain sensation down your buttock and your thigh? Mine almost felt like a rug burn, very tender to the touch, even when hit from water in the shower. I am 7 weeks out (360 alif fusion, l-5, s-1) and it is slowly going away.
I hope yours does too, hang in there.

Thanks for your replys. I'm

Thanks for your replys. I'm now 3 weeks post op and the thigh pain went away but now I have hip pain only when laying down on my back. I too hope that goes away with time.my leg and buttocks pain has improved but my back pain is pretty intense with spasms. I think I overdo it with having 2 little ones to take care of . I take soma for spasms but lately it doesn't seem to help and wondering if I should call doc for something else.

Rhonda ~

Look for posts about SCS (spinal cord stimulator). There is a PAIN MANAGEMENT category under I think "treatments" on this board. There are many posts pertaining to this device....Many people on the board have had them implanted.

Thigh pain-hello again

Well it's 3 AM and this burning pain in my thighs and feet are keeping me up. I'm actually 10 weeks post op and I still have the burning, pain, and numbness in the thighs. You're right, it does feel like a rug burn or sunburn. How long was your surgery? Mine was 6.5 hours - in the prone (laying on stomach) position.

I also have pain in the middle of my low back that goes into my right hip. When I called my surgeon he said that it could be inflammation and go ahead and take my NSAIDS to see if it helped - it did. But, now I run the risk of my fusion not taking so I take as little as possible. I have a bone stimulator that I wear daily to stimulate bone growth in the fused area.

By no means take any NSAIDS (motrin, aleve, etc.) without your doctors permission.

Take care,

Rhonda
