Thoracic Disc surgery T6 T7

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I am scheduled for surgery this coming Tuesday November 6th to remove a larged herniated Thoracic Disc at T6 - T7, I have had mild to moderate pain at this level, weakness in my legs that comes and goes and bladder dysfuction that comes and goes. I am nervous about surgery and wondering if I can find someone who has been through this? I am 39, healthy and active. My Surgeon is EDITED
He is going in from my side, I am espcially concerned about the pain from collapsing of my lung and chest tube post op.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Paula

Hello and welcome Paula ...

Firstly, there is a thread for November Surgeries, so come and join us there. Having others in a similar position to talk to while you are in recovery is a great help.

Thoracic surgery is far less common than lumbar (the most common) and cervical. There is a section here for Thoracic Problems, where you are most likely to find other with problems at this level. If you can't find it, let me know, and I'll post the link for you.

There are others who have had this proceedure and some who have had a thoracic fusion, which is even harder to recover from.

Have you been in an accident to have thoracic problems?
I have 3 thoracic discs that are protruding, 2 slightly compressing my spinal cord, but am coping with my pain and symptoms at the moment. I have been offered injections to try to help but don't feel like I need them right now. As you say, the symptoms come and go which is why I am coping.

My neck is also giving me problems, and I am having a 2 level ACDF on Monday!!
Two and a half years ago, I had a lumbar fusion and laminectomy. That has helped me a great deal with the awful pain and sciatica I used to have.
My spine is not good, but my dentist tells me I have very good teeth!! I keep smiling to show them off! Grin Grin Grin

I think you will be glad that you have found us. Have you looked at the articles on thoracic disc problems?

Take care,

Jelly

Hi Jelly,

Hi Jelly,

That would be great if you could send me the link. I will join the Surgy group too. Maybe I can help someone by sharing my experience with recovery from my surgery since it is so rare. I am sorry your neck is giving you problems. I have 3 bulging disks in my neck but they said it's no big deal for me and they should heal on their own. I didn't have any accident or trama, all I can relate this to is all the hard exercise I was doing, maybe I lifted inproperly. I do have mild scoliosis so perhaps this played a role. I have looked for articles and have read whatever I could find. I was hoping to hear actual peoples experiences with this procedue.

Feel better!
Paula

Hi Paula ...

Here are a couple of threads. The first one is for the area where all the thoracic problem threads are;
http://www.spine-health.com/forum/pain/upper-back-pain-thoracic

and the second one is a thread about someone who had a thoracic fusion. This is possible a more major surgery than you will be having, I am not sure.

http://www.spine-health.com/forum/pain/upper-back-pain-thoracic/post-t8-t9-thoracic-surgery

Keep searching and you will find lots of other stories.

I see you have joined the November Surgery thread. Eyelashes

Thank you so much! I am going

Thank you so much! I am going to read that now. he didn't say anything about fusion, just the rods and i assume that is not the same thing.

My hubby just got me an iPad mini so I can keep in touch in the hospital if I'm feeling up to it.
Thanks again,
Paula
