Pain management

Well I found out today that I have def been approved for pain management treatment. I'm just really scared what that entails and if the dr will cut me off my current meds cold turkey. I've heard of that happening. Plus my TTD has been suspended until I see this dr and he takes me back off work. I've just heard what a nightmare pain docs can be bc of drug seekers. Anyone out there have advice or had problems?

HI

I have been seeing my pain doc for over a year. He has helped me so much if not for him I dont think I could make it. Just be honest with him and do what he asks you, he is there to help you. If they catch you lying to them they will drop you fast. Also dont ask for narcotics this will get them thinking it is all you want. Tell them what you have tried and what seems to work. Well at least that is what has worked for me. Hope it goes well.

Well done you and good luck.

PM for the most part is intended to help patients develop alternative modes of managing pain, and any imposed change to our routine takes time and experience to become familiar. It is understandable to be tentative or even concerned about the unknown and what these changes may bring, that is normal. Some establishments have a policy of reducing the volume of medication initially so as to evaluate the patient from a more stable position and treatment is a partnership.

It is beneficial to have reasonable expectations of what improvement is possible and try all the alternatives over time to provided progress. Clinical evidence provides a basis for all our needs, it was a doctor who provided your medication, it is right that individuals seeking medication for alternative reasons are helped and your eligibility for PM is predicted to be useful for you.

PM was traditionally used as a last resort where other help had failed, or as part of a developing strategy for improvement, research suggest that the sooner PM can be introduced as part of the process the more beneficial for patients in the longer term, it is not a quick fix, a sometimes slow methodical, incremental change, some of the success is how you adapt, some things work more effectively than others and over time and experience what helps you specifically will become more apparent.

Many here have positive outcomes from PM and the need to focus on the benefits, we were all apprehensive initially and the need to embrace change.

Take care and good luck, keep us informed on how it is going.

John.

Open Mind.......

I had kind of the same issue that you are having... I just recently moved to a different part of my State and had to look for a new PM Doc, after been with the most wonderful PM Doc for 8 years, this was very, very difficult for me! But I went to my new Doc 2 weeks ago, and all was good!

Doctor's just want us patients to be honest, I brought ALL of my medications in a bag, I brought copies of my last MRI, and he was very happy with that, and truly, I didn't have anything to worry about.

Keep an open mind, he might want to change medications; my new PM did too, and I told him, that as long as I keep the same amount of relief that I am getting now, that I was open for changes. He also discussed doing some new procedures/shots, that I've never had before, I also said; OK, let's do it! Keeping an open mind, and been honest is a must, and if you do that, I am sure that everything will turn out just fine for you. Take care, and good luck!!

I've had over 20 surgeries in my life time, including a Thorocotomy to remove part of my left lung (Cancer). I am currently on Fentanyl patch 100 Mcg's, with Dilaudid for break through pain, I had a Spinal Cord Stimulator installed in June of 2008, and it has helped me with my neuropathic pain, but not my mechanical one. I am hoping to get an intrathecal pain pump some time this year, I just moved to the central part of my State, so I am seeing a new PM Doc. I have been on social security disability since my failed lumbar fusions. I am Social Worker, and mostly worked with HIV/AIDS patients and their families. I know that God has a plan for me, but he forgot to send me the memo! Smile
