Pain in carotid artery??

I'm 12 wks post op ACDF C5-6 and doing just fine and dandy-I thought. I'm having some terrible sharp/pulsing pains today in the right/front side of my neck that feels like it's in the carotid artery. It's right where you feel your pulse beat. Anyone ever have anything like this? It sometimes radiates under my jaw and into my clavicle (collar bone). It's really sharp enough pains to get your attention you know? Just wanting to see if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks.

Debbie --

Do you have any problems or the possibility of problems with TMJ? The location of the pain you are describing sounds very similar to that.

Sternocleidomastoid muscles

I checked the spine-health articles and don't see anything regarding this, but could it be the sternocleidomastoid muscles? I know my therapists have repeatedly told me my pain on the right front-ish side of my neck is from that muscle. You always have to be careful, especially if you think it is the carotid artery. Check with your doctor if the pain persists.

Surviving chronic pain one day at a time, praying for a reprieve because living another 40 years like this doesn't sound too fun!

Not sure what to tell ya. Hopefully it is just another group of muscles in your neck spasming. Have you called your surgeon yet to see what he thinks? I hope it backs off soon. *HUGZ* GF!!

Thanks

Thanks Brenda, NoS, & T

I didn't call my doctor (as usual I put it off). It got so bad yesterday evening that I was afraid I was going to have to go see about it. My left arm ached and the right side of my neck. I took hydrocodone and a flexeril but it didn't help so I chewed an aspirin and that took care of it. Now this morning it's barely hurting, just enough to know it's there. Hopefully it'll go away. Who knows? I get aggravated with myself. Seems like every time I feel better something will act up!

Thank you all for your help. I know it seems like I always have something to whine about.

Hi Debbie

I've had pain in the side of my neck to my clavicle a kind of dull aching throbbing and I'm sure it's my cervical C6-C7 area but didn't answer right away since I didn't have surgery yet. I would mention it to your surgeon if it's still bothering you though. My Dr. said Lyrica would help but I think Cymbalta works fairly well and I take a Naproxen the couple of times I've had it. I hope you're not lifting or reaching for things. Wishing you don't have the pain again. Charry

Hi Charry

The pain is still there but comes and goes. I'm hoping it's only from overdoing things the past couple of weeks and will simmer down soon. I'm still not sure if I'm supposed to take naproxen yet but will try to remember to ask my NS when I see him on Friday.

I hope you're doing well. Thanks for your reply. I know I can always count on you to help. Thanks again.

Aspirin

Debbie,

Glad to see it's backing down for ya. Please be careful taking Aspirin. On both of my fusions, my NS disallowed me from *any* aspirin for 6 months!

On a good note, do let him know you took it, and more importantly that it helped. It might give him thoughts on a new medication that will help you better.

Now as to whining; blah! We all have to do that, it is called "normal" woman! *HUGZ*

Hi Sunny

Yes of course don't take Naproxen that's what I have taken because I haven't had fusion surgery. You're not supposed to take any anti-inflammatories after fusion surgery. However when I had continuous sharp pains from my neck issues my Dr. wanted me to take Lyrica as well as Cymbalta and I only took it a few days and it felt better as well as applying my infrared heating pad for a few minutes each day. Hope you're feeling better now or will soon. Charry

Hi sunny

My clavicles on both sides hurt. Just started the last week or so...muscles in my neck that run up the side are quite tender as well. Not sure about the artery part. But i've got a question about anti Inflams, My neuro knew I was taking anit Inflams and never told me to not take them. I actually didnt take them for the first 3 weeks...maybe month. But I do take one a day if my tendonitis is flared up. And you know what else I didnt know. That if you go to the Dentist, they will give you a dose of antibiotics if you have had recent surgery up to 1 year. Due to the possibility for a bacterial virus to attack your weakest link so to speak. I went to the Dentist New Years Eve...I went thru with the cleaning, but I'm going to ask my Doc about this when i see him on Tues. Hate learning trickle down facts. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hope your feeling better Sunny...that aspirin seemed to really be the majik pill!
