If a thoracic herniated disc enters the spinal cord area and causes numbness below the compression point, a condition called myelopathy can occur. Myelopathy includes difficulty walking, balancing, and loss of bowel and bladder control.
The rib cage connects to the thoracic spine. The limited motion and added support from the ribs make the thoracic spine less likely to have a herniated disc occur, however this does occur in a small portion of patients.
