When coccydynia (tailbone pain) has failed to respond to conservative treatments or a cancer has been found in the coccyx, a coccygectomy can become the final resort. The coccyx is removed by a surgeon in order to provide relief to the patient, although it can take up to a year for painful symptoms to go away.
