Multilevel Fusion: Surgical Treatment for Severe and Debilitating Pain

Multilevel fusion to treat pain associated with degenerative disc disease is a controversial topic in spine medicine. Fusion of the spine refers to removing motion around or through a disc space by creating a bone bridge between two vertebrae. A two-level fusion may be considered for patients with severe, disabling pain occurring at two levels of the spine, however three-level fusions are rarely advisable.
