Calcitonin (CT) primarily metabolizes blood calcium by decreasing calcium absorption by the intestines, increasing calcium storage in bones and increasing calcium excretion through the kidney.
Calcitonin also improves bone strength by inhibiting the resorption of bone by osteoclasts. Because of its analegesic (pain relieving) effects, calcitonin in medication form is often prescribed for patients with osteoporosis and vertebral fractures caused by osteoporosis.
