Cauda equina refers to the bundle of nerve roots that branch out from the bottom of the spinal cord, reaching the rest of the lower body. When a herniated disc pinches or compresses the cauda equina roots, it can cause severe back pain and a loss of motor control known as cauda equina syndrome.
