Definition

Osteopathy is a field of medicine that emphasizes normal body mechanics and manipulation to correct faulty body structures, particularly the nerves, muscles, bones and joints. Osteopathic medicine is one of the two health fields nationally recognized as complete schools of medicine.

After a thorough examination and diagnosis, treatment may include osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), medications, various types of injections and/or back surgery.

The number of OMT treatments required varies with each patient and condition. While there exist no “hard and fast” rules as to the duration and exact number of treatments required, objective improvement in pain and/or functional abilities should become apparent in as few as five to six consecutive treatments, unless there are prominent complicating factors.

History of osteopathy

In the late 1800’s a doctor named Andrew Taylor Still developed the field of osteopathic medicine and is considered its founder. He was a pioneering doctor in the study of how the attributes of good health could help doctors understand disease and illness.

Through his experience with patients and research, he decided there was a better way to treat patients than the medical practices of the time. Because his new ideas were not accepted in the medical community, he established a new philosophy of medicine in 1874 called “Osteopathy.”
