Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)

Definition

Patient Controlled Analgesia is a pain medicine system in which a patient self-administers pain medication through the use of a programmable pump. A patient is connected to a pain pump that runs through an IV and the patient can dispense medication by pressing a button. The medication is limited on how much is dispensed at a given time. Morphine is the typical opioid used in PCA pumps. Patient Controlled Analgesia is an available pain management treatment for spine surgery post-operative care.

Pedicle

Definition

The pedicle is a stub of bone that connects the lamina to the vertebral body to form the vertebral arch. Two short, stout processes extend from the sides of the vertebral body and joins with broad flat plates of bone (laminae) to form a hollow archway that protects the spinal cord. The pedicles also form the base of the articular processes which are the points of articulation for the ribs. Pedicle screws have been used as adjuncts to spinal fusion surgery as a means of anchoring a spinal segment.

Definition

Periosteum is the layer of dense connective tissue surrounding the surface of a bone. The sheath of tissue is made up of both compact and cancellous tissue containing nerves and blood vessels that carry nourishment for the bone. The periosteum also provides attachment for muscles, tendons and ligaments. As opposed to the bone itself, the periosteum contains the nerve endings of neurons (noisceptors) making the tissue perceptive to manipulation.
