I CAN NOT GET MY FREAKING NECK TO QUIT HURTING!!!

all the pills and i have to get so freaking stoned it isn't funny just to make me not give a damn I am hurting it still doesn't stop the pain. I am tired as I know a lot of you are. My patience used to be unsurmountable but it is wearing thin very quickly, depression, no sleep, pain and on top of that I do not know if I will be able ot go back to music again and even if I did the band members decided to form another band because they did not want to wait on me to heal so instead of taking the chance on me NOT being able to play they just decided i wasn;t going to be able to and left.

Is this normal ?

I am 8 weeks post-op cervical C6-7 cervical fusion with auto graft,
. I am having pain not only in the site where my auto graft was taken, which I had since surgery, but also now my hip to my spine on the side of the auto graft. At times it is hard to walk because of the pain. I notified my surgeon & he thinks that it is the way I am walking is the problem. Did anyone here have this problem & should I be worried about it ?

MRI Results.....can anyone identify?

MRI Results...
* Central Herniation at C5-6 (MRI C-Spine)
* Reversal of normal curvature (MRI C-Spine)
* Tortuosity of vessels (brain MRA)
* Basil artery ectasia (brain MRA)

Is a central herniation a sure indicator of future surgery?

My symptoms are vertigo, numbness in hands, lips and mouth, shocks from eyes to fingertips, pain between shoulder blades, HEADACHES. Thanks!!

(SSEP) somatosensory evoked potential studies-what in the world that?

As you can see on my bio below, I am a "neckkie." My OS ordered an SSEP and I have never heard of it or known of anyone else having one. From my research, it is something they usually do intraoperatively to monitor the spinal cord. I read a lot of "stuff" about it, but don't know what it means in English, know what I mean? Anyone had one? Are the results definitive? Will this really inform the doctor of whether or not to do single, double, or triple level fusion?

1 more question about my hobby

I love to make jewelry, which unfortunately, requires me to bend my neck down - NO CAN DO!!!!! Prior to my surgery I had to do it on a limited basis. I was thinking if I could find something "raised" so that I wouldn't have to bend my neck, or at least as much. Does anyone know of anything out there? I could probably rig something up with my husbands help but I was hoping a company made this type of thing...any ideas? Thanks to all!!!! I hope everyone is having a pain free day

Doing fairly well. Got some lidocaine ptches from the Dr. and they work great. Sitting at the coputer at work was a real challenge but not anymore. I also rode my softail for the first time since the accident. Rode the couple of miles to work and it was GREAT! Just like walkin the dog. Wife is out of town and I had to pay my 13 yr old daughter not to call and tell her.hahahah. Best wishes to everyone out there and remember to drive on with the mission. HooAhh!

I know I have something I need to discuss with my surgeon especially me not sleeping(heck I asked my husband at 3 or 4 something this morning if there was anything good on tv) and why all of a sudden did my headaches come back.(I mean I didnt have one single migraine for a week after my surgery and then bam they started up again.) Anyways I will post whatever he has to say when I get back.
2 weeks post op ACDF using cages

I am 2 weeks post op ACDF levels C 4-5 C 6-7 (discs were herniated at these levels from an auto accident) using cages that were filled with bone harvested from the osteophytes that were removed during surgery.

Was feeling pretty good up until yesterday when I started having really bad headaches, neck and shoulder spasms, pain and numbness radiating down my right arm.

Before surgery most of my issues were left side related but now the right side is acting up.

and things are goin well. NS said at check up that xrays show almost 100% fusion! woohoo! Doin PT once a week and left arm 90% back. Work can still be a chore most days and I tried to move some bags of mulch a couple weeks back and found out that was the WRONG thing to do! Pulled shoulder muscle big time. Thats better now so I try not to complain. Gets a little better day by day. Wish everyone out there all the best and always drive on with the mission, no matter what! and THANKS to all the Vets!
24 hours home after ACDF

Dave had a 2 level on Thursday, C5,6,7. He had severe compression, but surprisingly minimal symptoms. Anyway, he is walking around here like his only issue is wearing that huge collar. He didn't get much continuous sleep last night. He ended up on a chaise with a pad in the family room. He would alternate between that and a rocking chair with a wedge pillow and ottoman. We will probably look for a recliner when he is allowed to go in the car, after 10 days. We will try to use the wedge and pillows to see if he can get comfortable on the bed.

2ND Opinion, Now what?

Greetings to all. I went and got a second opionion from a leading Ortho spine specialist. Boy was his interpitation different. My NS if you recall thought my problem was a medical mystery and disputed every radiologic and EMG finding. He wanted to do a foraminotomy but wouldn't guarantee that it would help with my weakness. I see this new Dr and his interpitation was very frightening. He was very alarmed by the weakness and said my tricep, deltoid and bicep muscle were all involved. He stated it wasn't a mystery to him and that I needed surgery ASAP to prevent any further nerve damage.

3 days post op ACDF with plating

I had my ACDF with plating at C6-7 on the 16th. I am disappointed I didn't get "instant" relief of the left hand and arm tingling that so many here seem to have. The pain is better though. I had an ACDF at C5-6 11 years ago with instant relief of pain, etc so of course I am worried now. I also have a pronounced left eyelid droop - has anyone here had this post-op? My voice also sounds like Minnie Mouse - I wonder how long that will last. Thanks for letting me share.

3 Level ACDF one year Post Op.. Still in Pain anyone else?

I'm just approaching my one year mark from my ACDF, c4-5, c5-6, c6-7, and I'm still in a lot of pain. My muscles are so tense I don't know what to do anymore aside from taking muscle relaxers 24/7. I've got a lot of crunching noises and I feel my range of motion has lessen due to sharp shooting pains.

I saw my neurosurgeon and he's sending me for another MRI and Xray.. by the looks of it he thinks my pain is coming from my joint facets and had prescribed another EMG and joint facet injections. The funny thing is, is that he hasn't even seen my new MRI or xrays??

Wow! I can't believe it's been 3 months. Honestly it feels like last week! I've still got hope
I started massage therapy & myfascial release therapy yesterday. This is not for sissies! OUCH!
3rd day post op!!

Hola Everyone! Sorry this is my first post, there wasn't really enough time or privacy to post soon. But, my surgery was Tuesday and it all went well! I was home the day after surgery and have been steadily getting better each day. It's amazing what sleep will do for recovery!!

Thank you again for all the good thoughts and well wishes, I know they made a difference. Has anyone heard from Jeff or Gary to know how their surgeries went?

~Lynne

4 1/2 months post op...Numbness

So I'm 4 1/2 months post op, ACDF 5-6, 6-7. This past week the weather starting getting colder here in Georgia. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I feel like I'm back to pre-surgery feelings again...a lot of numbness and tingling in my right arm.

Has anyone else experienced this from weather changing or is this just another part of recovery? I felt great until about a week ago. Of course, as usual, I have a call in to the doctor's office about this.

4 days post op

Well, I guess I'm the first to remind us we all do have different bodies. Mine didn't exactly like the pain medication being mixed. But I'm better now. Just got out of the hospital this morning. Thank goodness.

Lynne, I read your summary, cool, that you made it home so fast. Gary, if you have a summary, I didn't see it and will have to look later as I'm only on here a few minutes right now. Really tired and worn out.

I'm glad I had the surgery, my tingling and numbness is gone and the doctor was really happy about that part.

I can't believe it's just 4 weeks. It feels like forever! I really wish that I undersdtood the healing & recovery before now. I honestly think I feel worse now than I did before. My upper arm is not quite as painful, but I still have much numbness throughout my arm & into my fingers. I do recall the surgeon telling me that he could not guarantee that I would be pain or numb free. I guess I was being a bit more optimistic. I feel that I am in more pain today than before the surgery. Somehow I wonder if it doesn't have to do with not fusing the other bad dics.

OK, up until last week, I was doing pretty good on my recovery but this past week, I've been experiencing numbness and tingling like I had prior to surgery. I haven't called the DO's office...yet. I have my 6 month check up on January 5th.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so, did it go away? Is this part of the on going recovery? I'm a little frustrated now since it started.

Hello everyone! I'm 5 weeks post ACDF at levels C5-C7 and having to return to the doc tomorrow because of pain i'm experiencing in my right arm. I've read so many posts and talked to people who have had the surgery done and had no problems afterwards. They love to brag about being back to work after 2 weeks!

6 1/2 weeks post-op and exhausted

This seems really strange to me, so I thoughts I'd put it out there for comment. I am 6 1/2 weeks post-op, and have been working full time (office job) for the past week and a half. I am thoroughly exhausted!

While I was off, I was walking 6-8 miles daily, and felt pretty good most of the time. Prior to the surgery I worked out 5 days per week, and was in very good conditioning.

Does it seem reasonable that I ahould be so tired at this point?

Thanks.

6 month post op check up today

Well, bright and early this morning, I had my CT Scan and Xrays done. Doctor says I'm ahead of schedule (not really sure what that meant) for fusing. So that's good news to know. He said in July everything should be totally fused. We're about 80% there.

I asked about any pain or numbness/tingling. He said it is still normal to have that happen as the nerves are still figured out what is going on. Another good thing to know.

It's been more than 6 weeks now that I had acdf c-5/6. Still feeling worse than before. I started P/T 4 weeks post op,surgeon said no more. As long as I do my stretches at home. At some point I can try massage therapy.
I have been working since week 2. First just 1/2 days. Now full blown 8-10 hour days. I don't have a strenous job but do have to be upright & "on".

Hello everyone, just wanted to let everyone know that I had my 6-week post opt check-up today... I was able to remove my soft-collar FINALLY, as after reviewing my x-rays, I was informed I was fusing and that everything was holding/staying in place by my flexion and extension films!

My neurosurgeon said that I could go back to work after labor day, and I am going to see him again on 8/21. Of course, after seeing him, I was offered my previous job with a former employer.

7 mo's post ACDF, and just made it back from hong kong

Just checking in, it was January 08 when (1)I was at wits end from pain and failed treatments and (2) I got promoted and recommended for training in Hong Kong. Happy to say, made it home yesterday (with a soft collar on for the last part of the 20 hour journey) after a fantastic week. My back ached sitting in conference rooms (brought my heating pad), and when my seatmate on the plane tried to talk to me I had to explain that I couldn't turn my head for very long. And since it's been a recent topic - my voice does fade after a normal day of work - I'm not singing, but I have to talk a lot.

8 DAYS POST-OP C3/C4 ACDF

I feel the surgery went very well and recovery has been better than I ever imagined. However, the tightness in my shoulders and upper arms, and the numbness and tingling in my right arm are all still present. There has been no relief whatsoever. I know I was told that nerves can take up to 2 years to recover, but I did expect some change. Am I being too impatient and too hopeful? I would prefer to know if they are NOT going to recover then I can plan my life accordingly. Any thoughts from anyone on the subject?

8 week post op results

Had my first appointment since surgery on July 9th. Xrays looked good and the plate and screws are doing well.

I still won't be able to mud wrestle, ride roller coasters, skate board or lift anything heavy. And I was so looking forward to skate boarding. NOT. I think at 46, I'm a little too old for that anyway.

The doctor said he'll be able to tell in January if the fusing is taking place when we do the CT Scan. Guess it takes a while to really tell what's going on in there.

The numbness has gone down significantly over the past week as well.

9 months post op

hi guys..havent been here in a while. if anyone recalls,i had 1 level acdf on 11-19-07.
9 months have passed..i still get twinges and aches...and being a weightlifter cant help. i always fear im risking another herniation..
the nerve damage has not healed well..still considerably weaker on my left side.
on occasion, ill get tingling in both hands..im concerned i may have another bulging disc, just not a severe one. i feel some weird stuff back there....but my doctors shrug it off, which i dont understand..
anyway..does it sound like im doin well for 9 months or should i be worried?

Hi everyone

I had a 2 level lumbar fusion 6 months ago and am doing well from that. I was wondering if cervical people could tell me how your neck problems felt when they started. Did they come on suddenley or gradually?

A goofy poem about my Aspen Collar *** !!! Enjoy Smile !!!

My Aspen Collar is my friend
It helps me not to turn or bend
I wear it when I am in pain
or when my neck, predicts the rain

I wear my collar proudly now,
Surviving 5 surgeries, I don’t know how
Some may think my collar looks odd
I think it is a gift from God.

Peace and serenity for all!

OK Please I know this is a bit long. Had injections in the back, neck, had the ablation in lower back, and neck and I have had a really bad year with all this. My dog even died a few months ago (I wish I could have a ladder to climb to heaven and bring him back to me) I had the ablation done on the back and worked well for 3 months neck did not have the luck I had with the pain level of 1 for the 3 months. I just was in the hospital first for 8 days came home and back again for 7 appendix out and on it goes. Now my back is killing me and my neck well it is a stiff cookie.

has anyone ever done accupuncture for pain control? I'm still having quite a bit of pain neurologic and muscular, and taking neurotin everyday and have four the last three years plus pain meds. and am sick of taking them.I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried accupunture for that type of pain and if so did it help them any.I'm tired of popping pills and would like to try something more natural to my body.

ACD w/F still neck/shoulder pain and headaches

Just joined - great site by the way. Helps our mental state I think to talk with "real people." I had ACD w/fusion 3 months ago - C5-C7 area. Surgery ok - no biggie. Still low neck mobility and into the shoulder - no change on that. Still some numbing down arm. Was told shoulder was separate issue and need scope on that too. But the constant migraine feel in back of neck and low skull is really bad EVERYDAY. Does the mobility get any better on the turning point of things in time? Any ideas on what to do with that?

I will be having a 2 level ACDF next week. From what I have read, many of you have trouble swallowing for awhile. Have you been given liquid pain meds? I have a sensitive stomach to start with so I am a little worried about the effects of some of the meds.

ACDF - hoping this was the better option over non-fusion?

Im really stressed,

I had ACDF 2 weeks ago to c5/c6. Im reading heaps on the internet (as we do) that fusion leads to more ops in the future as it puts more stress on other levels of the spine. This is the last thing i wanted to hear! What are the percentage rates of needing future ops?? Im only 29, and have a 2 yr old and was quite healthy until this happened! Could someone shine some light on this topic? My surgeon said there would only be a 5-10 % chance of other levels needing surgery but from what i read this suregery has only been around for 10 years or am i wrong?

I have spinal cord compression from herniated c5/6 disc. ACDF on monday.
2 yrs of progressively worse tingling/numb fingers in right arm and "stinger" down arm if I get nudged in ice hockey. As I type I have a headache. Realize I've been having them for a year or more. constant pain on the top of my head and towards back of head. I've not connected the two till I was diagnosed last week and need surgery. Are they related?

Hey everyone,
I made a post in the surgery area about my story and how I fianally ended up with a surgery date.

September 3, 2008 I will have a 2 level ACDF @ C 4-5 and 5-6.

Lots of you know me here even though I don't come on and post much everyday.

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed I guess because it has just been so long that I have been waiting for this! Now the surgery is in less than 3 weeks. I actually could have had a date on next Wed, but that was just to soon to get things in order, and coordinate for my Mom to come up and take care of me from her home 2 1/2 hours away.

acdf for klippel-feil

I have a congenital condition called klippel feil syndrome, basically it is fusion of the cervical spine. I do have two openings c1 and c2 and c4- c5, now i am at risk for becoming paralyzed second to instability. At this point i do have left sided weakness and of course pain in the neck and across the shoulders. The surgeon feels that i need acdf of c4 and c5 with possible posterior plate placement. I have ddd, bulging disc into the epidural space, spondylitis and osteoarthritis. I am trying to reach out to others with the same or similar congenital problem.
thanks

Hi All. Well, I am checking back in again. Had 2 level ACDF on 9/10. The first night in hospital was tough with vomiting and discomfort (not pain). Pain was taken care of. The first day home was pretty good and than I crashed. Lots of nausea. Can't get comfortable. Brace is clostrophobic. On the other hand, I have tons of help and compassion. So, I certainly can't complain about that.I just want to feel "normal" again.

I will be having my surgery on 7/9. C5-7 with hardware. Going in at 6 a.m. and surgery is at 7:30 a.m. Right now, my DO has me staying in the hospital for 2 days, that's his standard procedure according to the nurse, who I talk to about every other day.

Hi - I am new to this site.

For about 5 years, I have had intermittent neck pain - lasts for a couple of weeks - goes away and comes back about once a year. The doctor says I have narrowing of the space C5-6. He says the pain indicates irrtiation of the C6 nerve root.
MRI is scheduled for next week.

I have tried numerous conservative treatments(anti-inflammatories, chiropractor, ostepathic manipulation, acupuncture etc. - most recently medrol pack and home traction.

I am very active - teach group fitness classes (some high impact and weight lifting) and ride horses. I am 55.

Actually got my MRI results today and I want to cry, what does this mean?

My neuro has a funny way of telling me what needs to be said, and excempting other stuff that may or may not scare me. This time I'm not sure, but I called for a print out of my MRI results, and they didn't even have them, and had to have the place fax it to them. I had this done in July, so could the doctor have known in Sept when I last saw him? I've listed my MRI first then the C-spine Xray...Which one does the doctor go by? One or the other or both?

ADR or ACDF

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and deciding on a surgery this month. I am a 32 year old female, 2 cervical herniated discs at C5-C6 and C6-C7. I have seen 5 surgeons thus far for opinions on surgery. I am more confused as ever ! Can any of you please please provide me some feedback on either ADR or ACDF ? I was leaning more toward the ADR multilevel surgery, as I have been hearing about complications with fusion. Any help would be great !!

Here forever in pain

after cervical fusion how do u care for upper and lower levels to prevent further surgery

hi guys
seems that i have read lots of posts re fusion. most people say that ten years later they need the upper or lower cervcival levels operated on due to excess wear and tear.

what can i do to care for my cervical spine to prevent this?? i am 30 and athletic. i do take care of myself but any extra info would be appreciated.

thanks

After neck fusion who wears their brace 100% faithfully

OK let's be honest here. every case and every surgeon is different when it comes to direction and instruction regarding cervical collars post fusion. we all know this. there is no documented proof or study done that even says wearing a cervical collar after fusion is necessary, beneficial or needed.

i personally had c1 c2 fusion twice. i was told to wear this collar for three months (6 more weeks to go). however . . . i do take it off to shower, when i get in from walks to massage my muscles and when i am watching tv.

Hello everyone.

Haven't been on much lately, but just wanted to let everyone know that it has almost been 4 months since my c6-c7 ACDF on June 9th, and I've been back to work now for almost a month.

I'm feeling really great, even lifting some things, and no issues. Oh course once in a while, I do notice I get a little "feeling" in my throat, but nothing much, maybe just a reminder to take it easy I guess.

Almost 5 weeks post op

And have a few quick questions. I know we all heal differently and our doctor's have different opinions but:

1. How long did you really wear a collar? I know there were a few nights where I took the collar off and didn't realize it until I woke up. I have been sleeping on an ortho pillow (the one with the high ends and the dip in the middle).

2. How long until you were able to drive? I've seen some people were able to drive after only 2 weeks.

muku View More Posts Well Now that I have been 5 weeks out and still light headed I am learning a bit more. Yesterday I got the news that I have a degenerated vertebrae in my neck (C7) and that after a chiro adjustment it is impinging on the nerve. SO next week I will get an MRI and hopefully some therapy.

am I making a mistake? Help!!!!

I am 45 and very active with tennis and running. 2 weeks ago, I had sudden onset of severe scapular pain with complete numbness of index and 2nd digit. Had MRI last week which show osteophyte compressing nerve root at C5 with herniation at C6. I continue to have numbness with significant pain and weakness in tricep and hand. Neurosurgeon recommends early surgery for best return of nerve function and I have ACDF scheduled next week.....now after reading these forums, I'm wondering if this is a mistake and should wait for surgery. Help!!!!!

Am I unusual?

I had C5-C6-C7 anterior fusion with a plate seven weeks ago. I am a 47 year old male. The pain and numbness I was experiencing went away immediately.

The only pain meds I took were Percocet for two days, and Tylenol for about a week. I had a few sleep issues for the first two weeks, but since then I feel great.

My problem is that I feel too good. I have done some pretty long hikes, ridden my motorcycle, gone offroad in my 4x4, driven my car six hours at a stretch, and even done some mountain biking. I can't stand just sitting around.

Another Update - Possible Additional Problems

I visited my PCP, today. For those of you who didn't hear, I actually took a VIDEO of some tremors I had in my left leg on Friday, August 15.

What happened with the tremors - my wife called the family for dinner. I stood up and started walking, shifting my weight to my left leg. When I did, I fell right to the floor with no strength in my leg. I sat back on the couch and observed that my left leg was trembling. I grabbed my point and shoot camera (which also has video recording ability) and took a video of the tremors.

I was diagnosed with sever stinosis in the neck, severe D.D.D
Any good outcomes of Anterior Cervical Discectomy

Hi I'm new here and my Dr. wants me to have an Anterior Cervical Discectomy. I've been reading up on it and it sounds scary but I either do it or face future problems down the road which can be irreversibal. I have spinal stenosis at C 3-4 C 5-6 a buldging disk at C 3-4 and a herniated disk abutting the ventrial cord at C 5-6 have some numbness in my right arm not really pain but a lot of discomfort after I do anything. My neck aches and I get the occasional headache.

Hi all,
I have several things going on physically (job injury). One of them we do know for sure is an xray showed cervical degenerative arthritis and disc disease c6/c7. thats how the report worded it. It has been over two months now and i am still in extreme pain at times, other times, i am still in pain. It just depends what i am doing as to what part hurts. Example.

Anyone els whose throat hurts after surgery when they cry?

It's been a year and a half since my anterior cervical fusion This might seem like a silly question, but it really hurts. whenever I cry, my throat tightens up severely, to the point of not being able to swallow. It is VERY painful. I am a widow, and alone, so there just are times when I can't help crying. Especially during Holiday seasons, when memories get overwhelming at times. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Anyone else on Workers Comp?

Back in Feb I was at work standing and talking to my supervisor (whose desk was next to mine)and as I sat down my chair rolled backwards sending me falling. I landed on my back and hit my head pretty hard on my desk leg and wound up with a mild concussion. I suffered from mild to moderate headaches for several months (which my PC doc said was going to happen)but nothing debilitating until one day in July when I woke up and could barely move my neck.

Anyone had a Cervical CT Mylogram?

Since my cervical fusion several years ago, I still have neck pain & headaches. I have been in PT for over a year (for neck, back & knee) but no relief. The muscles are so tight my PT can't even get into the joints for massage. She advised me to ask my PM doctor for new films. After my visit yesterday, they suggested a CT Mylogram. I know I had one years ago & was in the hospital overnight due to spinal fluid leaking & severe headache.

Has anyone had a cervical one....what can I except...I am a little nervous.

Hi, I've been on the message boards before but now am involved with making a huge decision regarding my neck. I've had lumbar fusions from L3-L5 and an SI joint fusion that I'm still recovering from since last December. Five months ago I slipped and herniated 3 discs in my neck and found it's bad enough that I should have a 3 level fusion. My doctor isn't pushing me into anything which I repect him for. I don't know if I should go ahead at this time with surgery again or play the waiting game.

Anyone had deltoid & bicep nerve damage in arm after ACDF?

Hi everyone. I had ACDF (c-3 - 7)surgery on 8-6. I'm recovering fine from the surgery, but had a very rare complication. My left arm/shoulder cannot be lifted and am told that when my dr. came upon c-5 disc he said everything exploded and the nerves popped. I am receiving OT 3 x a week at home but am wondering when can I expect to see any kind of improvement at all? I can't even brush my hair! If anyone has had this happen to them, please, please email me. I'm really concerned. Thank you.

Anyone have double-crush syndrome?

My OS says I have double crush syndrome, being that I have carpal tunnel syndrome plus cervical radiculopathy. I think basically the carpal tunnel wouldn't be noticeable if the cervical issues didn't exist. I mentioned to him that my hand was tingling more lately, and he said he'd like to do surgery on it. Well, last night I was experimenting with with trying to stop the tingling by moving the position of my head and it worked!

Hi everyone!

At my most recent Dcotor appointment to see an Ortho Surgeon for a sceond opinion (I do Have a neuo but my switch to the Ortho for any more surgery)The Ortho asked when my last EMG was and I said it was a few months after my car accident in Oct of last year. I have since had a Posterior Cervical foraminotomy. He asked if anyone ever took an MRI of my shoulder to look and make sure some of the pain is not being generated from the rotator cuff.

There was no question about what needs to be done to my cervical spine. Two level ACDF at C 4-5 and C 5-6.

Anyone know Atlanta Cervical Spine Surgeons?

Hi All,
I am new here. I am being told that I have a severely herniated disc C6-7 and will need ACDF surgery sooner rather than later. While I believe that to be the case through online research and the severe arm and chest pain I have been going through for a while, my biggest question is how to find the most qualified doctors in the Atlanta area to do this surgery. Does anyone know the Atlanta area for recommendations? Where do I go to research surgeons with the best success rate results in Atlanta? Please help!

I got a copy of my radiologist report on my MRI and well I dont know what some of it means, I was hoping someone here may know the "english" translation LOL... Here we go: Mild endplate degenerative spurring noted at C5-6 and C6-7. (is that the fancy way to say arthritis?) This results in mild cervical spondylosis. (whats spondylosis?) Mild neural foraminal stenosis is noted at the C5-6 level bilaterally. (well thats nice, have no idea what it means though lol) OK thats part ONE and might as well be written in Chinese!

Anyone know what Protrusion/Herniation MM is enough to cause pain etc?

I was wondering if anyone knew what millimeter of a cervical protrusion/herniation would start to give you pain or warrants perhaps seeing a neurosurgeon for? One of my biggest is 3mm. I just want to make sure my neurologist is correct by saying I don't really have anything that warrants a visit to a NS. Eventually I might want to see one just for an opinion, not for surgery though.

I've been dealing for 10 months with what I just found out is a herniated disc at C5 shown on the MRI. On the C-spine Xray showed at C5/C6 bone spurs/osteoarthritis but mild to moderate. Aside from the burning, aching, numb pain I get in the neck, arm and hand, I've also been getting headaches.

These headaches first seemed connected to stress then turned into an everyday thing. The pain was usually on the top left side, felt like someone was pushing down on my head. I also had similar nerve pain like the rest of my body pain. I also had pain at the base of the skull and neck.

Anyone with total loss of voice out there?

I just had surgery about two weeks ago, and have not recovered my voice...seems it's not even better at all Can't even make a phone call.

I have read some allude to vocal cord paralysis in these posts, but say their voice is weak..my just is non-existent.

Most annoying were the nurses that would not answer my call because they couldn't hear my response after buzzing for pain meds! I would advise anyone having this surgery to make sure their surgeons keep the nursing staff informed of the fact that they may not be able to talk!

  Hello everyone!

Well, we had so much snow this week that it has caused somewhat of a disaster in terms of attempts at travel. I was supposed to see a second opinion neurosurgeon tomorrow at 2 pm after waiting 2 months for this appointment. We had over a foot of snow tho in the past day or so. This has made travel impossible.

Hello,
About 3 weeks ago, I was told I had a disc deteriorating in the neck and now my arm is hurting and tingling. I guess that is coming from the disc. Just wanted your opinions.
Thanks
I would also like to here from anybody who had this option, but choose not to have an ADR and went with the Gold standard ACDF.

artificial disc replacement

New to board. I have a significant disc bulge at C5C6 with mild cord compression at C5 and nerve root compression at C6. I have symptoms of left arm numbness and tingling. I also had severe cervicogenic headaches but those have resolved. Original MRI and evaluation was done in May. Spine surgeon recommended discectomy with fusion. I have concerns about this procedure due to the risk of adjacent segment disease and limited range of motion.

Artificial Disk Replacement

So Ive been reading about ACDF daily for almost 2 weeks, everything I can find, even new procedures that do the surgery endoscopically, where they put a band aid on your "entry" point and send you home. One article I read was from the UK where a woman had disk replacement surgery, something she got done for free under thier health care system, and she is doing wonderfully. I understand that insurance companies wont pay for this here in the US, and I am assuming that it is because of the lack of FDA approval?

Artificial Disk when you already have a fusion

Hello all, I am new so I hope I posted this in the right place. I have had 3 neck surgeries to date, in 03 I had the protruding disk at c5-c6 shaved, then in 05 I had that segment fused. Then in 07 I had to have c6-c7 shaved. I am doing everything I can to avoid another surgery. I have had two steroid shots so far and they don't seem to do much. I am using an inversion table now, just got it, my figures are crossed. What I am trying to find out is can they put an artificial disk in under my fusion?

At my wit's end

I'd like some feedback on treatment for chronic deep neck pain. I've had an epidural which worked great for my muscle pain but it's worn off now. Then I had two nerve blocks-the first one worked perfect. The second one left pain in a specific spot which seemed to correlate with the injection site, plus I got a big muscle knot. We decided to go ahead with the permanent block. I got a huge bruise and of course that really hurt. But that pain never went away and then I got neuropathic pain. I'm on MS Contin 30mg X 3/day plus percocet for break-through pain.

Hi all, I went to try the Spinal decompression. i checked with surgeon he said it was OK to try it out. The Chiropractor is not adjusting me or anything like that, I know of few of you were alarmed. It is just consultation up to this point but he let me try to the cervical spinal decompression machine for free today to see how it feels. I had traction for the first time last week and that was more trouble than it was worth. So I go in to try SD, it is this huge machine with table next to it apparantly high tech all computerized. I laid there all hooked up for about 25 min.

I had a three level discectomy and cage fusion with two big spurs removed on 7-8. The pain on the left side of my neck where the damage was is gone, but I am having bed sharp cramping in my right neck and shoulder. I am still having cramping pain in my forearms. Is this normal? How long before I start noticing some relief? I will be returning to work in two weeks and am worried about disability.

Friday will be my 3 week post acdf. As I had posted before I have been pressured by my boss to go back to work. I actually went in the last 2 days for just 4 1/2 hours each day. I do not have a physically challenging job, but am constantly on the telephone (I did finally get a headset that is extremely helpful) & in & out of my desk assisting people. Training my brand new asst. Just "being on " at all times. Di I keep doing this & hope it gets better soon. I am in so much pain after just about 2 hours into it.
