TENS technology offers drug-free
pain relief for muscle and joint pain.

What is TENS Therapy?

Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TENS) Therapy uses low-voltage electrical current to relieve pain. The electrical stimulation helps the body block pain signals from travelling to the brain and assists in the production of natural painkillers called endorphins. TENS therapy is a drug-free, non-invasive, and fast means for pain-relief that has been used in clinics for decades. TENS therapy made its way into patients’ homes after it was adapted from a clinic machine to a hand-held unit for patients to use anywhere.

How do TENS machines work?

The key to TENS therapy is the use of electrical impulses to control the way the brain processes pain signals from affected areas. TENS allows the patient to “neuromodulate,” or control these impulses by restoring normal impulses from the body’s extremities to the spine. TENS accomplishes this through the production of natural “feel good” chemicals like endorphins, enkephalins and dynorphins.TENS inhibits pain signals that originate from the spine and inhibits the function of nerves that may be abnormally excited.

Electrical current travels along nerves
Gel pads are placed on the affected area and the user feels a deep massaging sensation. This is the electrical current traveling across the nerve fibers.

Pain signals are blocked
The electrical current inhibits pain signals from being sent and received by the brain’s pain center.

Natural painkillers are released
The body releases natural painkillers; endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins.

This has given me a positive outlook on life, I feel stronger, and I feel like nothing can stop me now.

The Science Behind TENS: Clinical Trials and Studies

Dr. Stuart M. McGill conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of an at-home TENS device. The study looked at 41 men and women from an outpatient clinic. Scientific Studies conducted by Dr. Stuart M. McGill, Ph.D. tested:

  • The effects of a TENS device on pain and muscle spasms
  • Changes in tissue oxygenation, as quantified by Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), while treated with a TENS device

This Study Found that TENS Therapy is Scientifically Proven to…

icon

Relieve Pain:
The study showed that patients reported a noticeable difference in their perceived levels of pain after using the TENS device for only 20 minutes.

icon

Reduce Muscle Tension and Spasms:
The study found that using TENS therapy significantly reduced muscle tension and spasms in patients in one use.

icon

Increase Tissue Oxygenation:
Patients using TENS therapy were measured with Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) technology and showed a measureable increase in blood flow and the rate of oxygen consumption in the body.

icon

Increase Circulation:
The study demonstrated TENS therapy's ability to encourage blood circulation; promoting faster and more efficient transportation of nutrients to the body’s cells.
