Lumbar epidural injection

I fell getting out of my husbands truck n December I came down hard on the side rail..could not walk sit.left leg was numb with shooting pains....Family Dr dismissed it as a bruised tailbone..

I had x-rays ,.negative and negative results from massage, physio and chiro..Finally was sent to pain Dr.

.Bone scan..CT scan were done....Cannot have MRI due to hardware in my ears..Diagnosis. Bulging discs in l4 and l5..sciatica.facet joint shows some arthritis. ... it hurts to stand or walk for any length of time. I have lower back pain..burning and it travels down into left foot..

.bursitis in left hip..which I never had any issues but now interfers with daily life.

I have had facet joint injection..sacrum injection and muscle injection to relieve pain. So far nothing has worked...

Pain Dr actually said he is running out of ideas on how to treat this and has not referred me to a specialist. He believes the numbness and pain is residual effects from a disc that was herniated and a violent strain..By the time I had a CT scan the disc was no longer herniated buy bulging????He decided I should go for a lumbar epidural injection

I'm getting  injection Oct 3 and was wondering what should I expect day of or after??.

I'm going thru hell and feel like Dr's don't listen .This pain is not in my head..

Below is a link to an article that should answer a lot of your questions.
    Epidural Steroid Injections

Sometimes doctors get frustrated too. After you have tried everything and nothing works, then what is he supposed to do. But at the same time, have you asked him what is the next step, who can you refer me too? Get another opinion.
Same with me. Other than surgery, which I cannot have, my doctors's words were "we're out of options". No one wants to hear that.

    Hi yvesha,

If I were you I would do more research about the steroid injections. They suggested the same to me and I refused. I have protrusions and annular tears on L4/L5 and L5/S1 and I'm in terrible pain. I am managing with tramadol and diazepam.

I'm going to do some serious rehab before accepting the injections, and even then, I might choose to invest on a PRP injection instead of steroids, because they are associated with several negative side effects. It's your life you're taking about. Try to find a better doctor and when in doubt go to pubmed and find papers that support the treatment they want to give you for your condition and of course also here.

Don't give up. I refuse to believe that we cannot heal properly with the current scientific advances. If you find an article or a treatment you think that can help you better, suggest it to your doctor. Many don't keep up to date with new treatments and just repeat their same outdated procedures.

    Good luck.

PS: Another personal suggestion is to avoid chiropractors and/or any type of "adjustments"  at all costs.

I agree with hurtcat, try not to use a chiro. They are not spine specialist.

Other than the original cause, your story and symptoms are very similar to mine.  I was referred to a pain management doctor by my orthopedist.  My first lumbar epidural injection only  gave me 2 weeks of relief.  Four months later I had a radio  frequency ablation  (RFA) procedure .  It is supposed to give 6-18 months relief.  For me, I was pain free for 5 months. After the 5 month mark, I started with some pain, but nowhere as bad as the original buckle my knees, take my breath away pain.  I am at the one year mark at this time, and plan on Having the procedure again in the next two months.

As for what to expect from the epidural injection, I just had some localized  achiness  for about 24 hours, nothing horrible.

  • Tried the injections and they made things worse for me, they are not FDA approved either.
