First of all I want to say thank you I have found this site to be very friendly and lost of good feed back from people that understand what I am dealing with.

I have been asked a few times bout what surgeries and spine issues I have its a lot to reply to individules so I thought I would post it. Then maybe get some feed back since I already feel better just talking to people with the same issues its been very hard and extremely depressing try to cope with having spine diseases, not to mention the medical night mare I have experienced along the way, and lets not forget the pain :''(

I have experienced back and arm pain since I was a pre teen. It would hurt so bad for a few days then go away, but nothing that needed medical or atleast I thought :?

It was not untill I had my daughter in September of 2005 I had alot of back pain that was not going away. Then in Feb of 2006 I had the pain that was really bad it lasted for 5 plus days, I was just driving and pressed on the break, I heard a pop and couldn't move. the pain was so bad I kept passing out, someone nearby called 911 I was taken to a hospital just a few blocks away, went straight to OR, that was the start of my hell. :''(

I had emergancy surgery to repair a disc that ruptured L5-S1 it wrapped around my siatic nerve and also had a spinal leak. This sucked cause I had no warning or notice. Spinal leaks suck cause you can't even lift your head up for several days.

Well 6 weeks later I went back for a anterior posterior fusion for L4-S1, guess I really need it at the 1st surgery but didn't have the right Dr.s there. Oh and my GI system never returned to normal after that surgery. Would love to know if any one has experienced this.

I had found out that I had a few different spine diseases Degenerative disc ( I only have 7 discs in my whole spine that don't have multiple bulges) and degenerative joint, this is not only in my spine, hips, knees, and elbows. Spinal stentosis, these are the main there is a few different ones the are from the effects of DDJ,DDD and the stentosis

Then that same year I blew a disc in my neck had 2 level fusion there in October of 2006. Also the same time I had a incorrect EMG done. I had sever carpal tunnel and the test showed none it took a year to get a speccialist and have surgery on both had in middle of 2007. The two little carpal tunnel surgeries gave me the most relief out of any surgery preformed.

Sad to say I still had sever pain in neck and back.

Close to Christmas in 2007 I had another disc surgery then the Dr.s gave me a spinal leak in that surgery, so back to no being able to pick my head up for days.

In feb on 2008 I had a complete refusion done, my hardware was very loose and moving my disc did not heal from surgery a few months back. So I had the level above fusied with complete new hardware and new bone graph installed except the plates from the front they are loose but will never come out nobody is ever going threw my belly again, and lots and lots of scar tissue removed.

I had a infection almost 5 weeks after surgery and had to have my back reopened and a drainage tube put in. My whole back is just scars, looks like a bear clawed my back.

I have a cervical re fusion comming up soon and hope this is IT, I have a unsafe failed fusion there.

Guess what I'm still in Pain :''(

Thanks for listen to my problem and advise or words of wisdom would be nice.

  • Ouch Paula,

You have my sympathy, lot of good it will do. Sounds like you been to hell and back.

I think that you need to be strong, what else can I say?
    Life is never easy ay?

At least you are not alone and that counts for a lot.
I'm interested to hear your front plates are loose...they were discussed as an option for me but as yet not in immediate future. What was so terrible about the front approach then? How are your guts still messed up?

  • Thank you

Yes my front plates are loose my 1st lumbar fusion did not fuse I had plates in the front and rods and screws in the back on both sides, it all was loose. But the front plates will be fine my lumbar is almost fused and the plates are serving no purpose, just a little bling, bling. I have so many Gi problems now that I would never even consider letting them go threw my belly again. I have a total of 13 scripts I fill monthly most of them are for GI. And see A GI specialist for it also.

As for being in hell and back I agree I can't control the surgeries I NEED its not like I have the option of PT or injections when a disc blows or need a new fusion. Not to mention I have 3 children to.

  • Paula,

I know at times you must feel so overwhelmed. We are here to support you. I wish I knew what the answer to your pain would be, we just have to keep going don't we.

Hope you find the right doctors to help you, that's most of our battle.

    Take care of you!
  • that you are dealing with all of this. You did not mention if any of the meds that you take are for pain? Sometimes when we get to the end of the line with surgeries and procedures that is all that is left. Nobody wants to be on pain meds for the rest of their life but sometimes there just is no other option other than to be in pain and have zero quality of life. Good luck to you and please keep us posted with your progress.
