Extreme side effects from lumbar RFA

Ok, I had a lumbar RFA in Feb. 2018. It is now July, when this was being done my doctor wasn't hitting the nerves right and instead of me feeling it in the L3, 4 and 5 area, I felt it in my buttocks. My doctor said thatst ok but u may have some numbness in my buttocks area. After the procedure I instantly felt a burning, numb sensation in my buttocks, hips and low back. I have sharp burning/stabbing pain along with a bruised raw sensation when I touch the area. My doctor wants to go back in and redo the procedure but I'm too scared to do this again. I want to know if this is something that will be permanent and if a specialist (neurologist)may be able to help. I take neurontin, pain meds. along with muscle relaxers but nothing is helping. Please help me, I don't know what to do.

  • My PM Dr. said I needed another MRI when I had new numbness raw feeling in my butt area and my Family Dr. ordered it. Some more herniated discs for me but not related to RFA. I hope your PM Dr. uses live Xray to do RFA.

Lots of risks involved like it's on the consent you sign. I've had it done about 5 times and last time was the best but get it done every year to every 18 months. Hard to predict how you''re nerve will react. Mine is sore and have to ice back every few hours for about 20 minutes each time as it's painful. I even have burn marks, bruises from my first one in one of my posts.

But that's my experience as we can''t give medical advice just sharing. take care and welcome to Spinehealth. C

  • I'll never have an RFA again.  Permanent damage from my last one.  Sorry this happened to you, but, sometimes things go wrong.

  • Given what happened and how you're feeling, I'd suggest a second opinion.  You should be at peace with the decision you make and it sounds like you're far from that.
