Driving with clamshell brace

I had a T-12 to L-5 spinal fusion.  I have been wearing a clamshell brace for 2 months.  Has anyone had a similar surgery and brace?  How long did you have to wear the brace?  Can you drive with the brace? I appreciate any information.

  • Hi jamoor - I had a 10 level fusion (T9 -S1) and wore a TLSO brace for 16 weeks.  I don't know if you would call it a clamshell, more of like a sandwich board - lol.  It had rigid front and back surfaces and draped over my shoulders with straps.  It tightened around me with velcro straps.  I was able to drive just fine with my brace.  It actually was good for in the car and also for seats on an airplane because it provided the support for my back that those seats didn't necessarily offer.  I hope you have a good back up camera for when you do begin driving because twisting isn't something you should be doing.  The other big thing I noticed when I started to drive again after my surgery was to make sure you don't turn too far into a right hand turn when you have to look for traffic coming from your left.  If you are facing too far into your turn you need to almost twist to look for oncoming traffic.  These are things you don't think about until you do them.  Hope your recovery is going well.
