Can herniated disc make me more susceptible to piriformis symdrome?

In the past year or so I suddendly acquired piriformis symdrome (electrifying pain along the sciatic nerve down the leg). I'm not doing anything strenuous with my legs, but my back pain got worse. Most of the symdrome of my back pain affect the left side (e.g. more pain on the left, more numbness on the left, etc) Is it possible for the sciatic nerve to be aggravated by the herniated disc, causing it to become more susceptible to piriformis symdrome?

Now I have to do piriformis stretch almost daily to avoid having an episode of leg pain, sometimes in my sleep. Ouch.
