Pre Op question

Im going to have a laminectomy and fusion L3, 4. Minimally invasive with screws. I have been told two different things about when to stop taking Ibuprofen before the surgery. Five days , and 7 days. My pre op is 6 days before my surgery. I have communicated with the Surgery coordinator, and my medical Doctor who cleared me for Surgery. I see the Surgeon for the pre op appointment. My medical Doctor said stop taking everything except critical meds like blood pressure. Even a multi vitamin.. which seems a bit extreme. For those that have had spine surgery can you share what meds you stopped taking and for how many days before surgery. What medication you were allowed to take. It’s going to be a long week without Ibuprofen.

Alot of the issues with medication such as some vitamins and Ibuprofen is the clotting/bleeding problems they can cause during surgery. Basically they act as a blood thinner.

Alot doctor suggest switching to acetaminophen for pain relief a week or so before surgery.  Also make a list of any and all supplements and double check with your surgeon that none of them too will interfere

Sending you some well wishes for your upcoming surgery.  Keep us posted how it all goes  :)

As David said, follow what your surgeon has advised, he has his reasons. When you see him for your pre-op appointment, please go over what you should and should not be taking.
Everyone is different. Some doctors allow certain things and some don't.
    Still, listen to your surgeon.
