  • It is really scary when you know something is wrong but not what it is. Glad you found this site! You'll get lots of support and information here. Ladybug is right, constipation can cause pain to flare up. Lots of fruit, maybe some prune juice or as she said CALM can help with that. It's great that the dr.s are getting you in so quickly. An MRI will show if there is a pinched nerve and if so what is causing it. The pain you described is called sciatica and is very common. The good news is that in many cases it will heal over time. My husband hurt his low back recently and was in horrible sciatic pain for a few weeks and is now doing much better! Try not to worry too much(easier said than done,I know). L
  • Hi Dee,
I am sorry to hear you are feeling scared.
Please keep going to try to get a firm diagnosis as to the underlying cause of your symptoms. My understanding is that any type of bowel of bladder disturbance is a possible symptom of a serious medical problem requiring immediate medical intervention - although this is rare. You can read more about it (cauda equina syndrome) here:

Again, my understanding is that this situation is rare - just wanted you to know why constipation is considered a possibly relevant symptom.

Please check back in here when you can and let us know how you're doing!

    Kind regards,

  • Welcome fellow Canadian to this site. I too have been in severe pain in back, hip and legs for the past 4 months. I have though had sciatica problems over the past few years and have dealt with them through Chiro, PT, acupuncture and massage and felt better within 4-6 weeks. This recent bout due to the 4 month duration without relief from therapy has my doctor sending me to see a neurosurgeon and I have been waiting for 4 weeks so far for a phone call from him. Thank god for the drugs I am on now or I would not be able to walk. (Lyrica/Tramadol/Tl-3) You were quite lucky to get in to see a neurologist that quick! Keep us posted this is a wonderful site with loads of information. :H Shirley-Ann
