Post surgery 4 weeks and sudden increase in swelling

I had ACDF C-5-C-7 4 weeks ago and about 3 weeks into it came down with a pretty nasty flu which kept me in bed for a wekk

Now I suddenly 2 inches to the left of my incision and on the back of my neck developed large lumps , about the 1/2 the size of a baseball

I also have been having an extremely odd reaction where I develop large welts on my skin which go away after a hour or so , it seems a bit like poison oak

I am planing to go to my NS as soon as possible , but am curious i anyone had anything similiar happen to them

  • Thanks paul,

I already left a message at their emergency number 2 time over the weekend , just was hoping that someone was going to tell me it was no big deal

  • I completely agree with Paul. Swelling that size sounds fairly impressive, and would definitely be something you want to call your doctor about.

Interesting about the welts. I have been having something similar. Starts as a welt with something that looks almost like a blister in the center but isn't raised, just shiny. Then the welt turns very red and then turns into a bruise. I've been wondering if it is a reaction to bmp and plan on asking the doctor about it. but I really have no idea. I think you should definitely bring both of these things up with your surgeon.

    Good luck.
Surviving chronic pain one day at a time, praying for a reprieve because living another 40 years like this doesn't sound too fun!

  • Did they use BMP in your neck? There has been some discussion about this over in the surgery forum. Get in to the NS ASAP. Sue
  • Recovery can be bad enough but with the FLU also - you ought to get a medal for that one. I will tell you what an emergency doctor at a great hospital told me - "you know we are here and open 24/7 and all you have to do is come in". Since he has told me that, I have not put of things that I would worry about and play phone tag with a nurse or a on call doctor. I hope your lumps turn out to be nothing and wish you a speedy recovery.
