chiropractor question

AnonymousUserAAnonymousUser Posts: 49,578
I went to a chiropractor for treatment on my lumbar herniated disc at L4-L5. They were also doing treatment on my neck because I have such a large curve from years of working on a computer so they were doing a lot of work on my neck as well.

Well after 2 months the treatment they were doing on my back was acutally making my disc symptoms worse in my lower back and the nuerosurgeon told me to quit going to avoid further damage.

Since i stopped going and now ever since then ive been getting a lot of pains, cramps, and knots in my neck, shoulders, and upper back, and the pains are also in both arms and hands. When I wake up in the morning my upper back, neck, arms, and hands are extremely stiff and i get a lot of random pains in my arms and knuckles of my hands along with tinglyness, numbness, and twitching in my hands, arms, and fingers. My arms seem to get random cramps when i use them a lot like typing as well.

My question is could this be from the chiropractic treatment with my neck. Could they have maybe herniated a disc or pinched a nerve in my cervical region? Or is the pain from my body trying to adjust to not being worked on anymore and how long does that take? Its just adding more stress to my life and ive had nothing but stress ever since i herniated my back. I appreciate you time and your comments on my situation.

  • I also seem to be having problems with my jaw where it seems to be either stiff, clenched, or tired and weak.
  • Yes the chiropractor could have caused a disc problem in your neck also. The only way to know though is to get an MRI of your neck to see if there is damage in there.

My opinion from personal experience is I will never go to a chiropractor. I went a few years ago and he turned my small disc protrusion into a large herniation with severe nerve compression.

  • i agree i think my experiance with chiro ruind my back
  • I've never been to a chiropractor and I'm 48 years old.I have cervicle disc problems/DDD and numbing/tingling in my hand/thumb/fingers.My left shoulder is painful and of course my neck.I have muscle spasms and knots and well....your post just sounds an awful lot like my own symptoms. My right side is not painful though, but other than that the rest is very similar.

You know I have to add that anything I say is opinion only, but it sounds cervicle to me.Have you had MRI or x-rays on your neck area?Perhaps you have developed DDD or arthritis in the area from the chiropractors treatment.I'm only speculating here of course.

There is no way to know IMO if this could be caused from the chiropractor or if in time it could have developed on it's own.Even if the damage shows up on x-ray/MRI there would be no way of knowing for sure I wouldn't think.
  • IMHO, he saved my life :X . I came to him as an emergency patient. My pain was so bad my eyes were going blurry. He is the only person to provide me relief without drugs!!! I must say, it is MUCH nicer to go to work for an emergency back problem than it is to leave work for an emergency back problem!!! :D :D :D He doesn't adjust my back but he does adjust my neck when I want it. I started having neck problems from the way I have to sit because of my protruded disc at L5-S1. Maybe get an MRI of your neck just in case :S . I found I have spondylothisis in my neck that is a direct result of the way I have to sit due to PAIN!!! ~X( Chiropractors can offer passive treatments, my favorite being ultrasound. Ultrasound is concentrated heat, sound waves, and electromuscle stimulation. It serves as a safe and effective way of decreasing inflammation. It works well on my back and neck although you do have to do it over and over to keep the effect. Also, wouldn't it be nice to go and have electomuscle stimulation and a hot pack put on your aching neck? There is no way that this could damage you, it's safe and passive. Maybe some acupuncture for pain management? Think of it this way, you hurt your back by things such as bad posture, structural abnormalities or an accident. If it wasn't an accident, it took a long time for you to get the way you are. It will take effort and time to get you back to up to operating speed. You can ask him not to adjust you at all if you don't want it. If he's any good, he'll listen and seek other ways of treating your pain :D . I will say that if you try chiropractics, without adjusting, for 6 months with no relief, you gave it the good ol' college try and now it's time to move on :''( . If you find relief from anything he does, stick with it, as it is a natural way of pain management that can be used in combination with meds for as long as you like.

I hope this helped a bit, I just woke up and couldn't sleep. Maybe it's fate since I never usually look in this group... <:P <br />I hope you find some relief and that you are safe in doing so. Please take care and do what you feel in your gut. What works for one may not work for the next so keep trying and keep your head up, haha, ok maybe rest your head as much as you can, hehe!!! :))( =)) :))(

    Much love and positive energy,

  • it is possible you will never know till you get testing on your cervical area through a MRI i know the cost is outragous, so without a good insurance plan ummmm.

anyways if its bothering you that much you need to seek medical attention for it. do you have any tingling or numbness anywhere??? or just pain????

now chiro's have worked wonders for my hub for years.
for me no, not letting them touch me. im to sensitive from fibro and other issues.

my pain managment dr once said he has had many of patients that went to a chiro before getting testing and seeing a specialist and wow it did perm damage to them.

yes there excellent chiro's out there that won't even touch you sometimes due to your condition.
and yes there are other alternative treatments out there now that chiro's use like mentioned in the above post.
my hub does not get cracked the old fashioned way anymore.
it a pen type thing that finds the hotspots and it get pushed down into that spot (like a deep massage) it takes about 3 treatments then he feels wonderful he has DDD in his lower back, his disk is just about gone.

as you know we are not medical professionals here and can only give our personal opinion on things.

    hang in there
