  • Hi Shannon,
Welcome to spine health!!!! You have found the right spot for AWESOME support through the good and bad times. >:D<
We are able to give you a ton of personal experience but none of us are qualifed to give medical experience. Yeah alot of us are nurses etc, but that doesn't count ;) ;)

As Paul stated where is the pain coming from???
Is it all over pain? Just spine pain? Hip/leg pain?
What week are in you in recovery now??
Are you past the 3 months yet or still at that point???
    Have you started PT yet?
    Do you have a brace??
    What meds are you on?
Mabye they have lost their effect..

I was also told by my dr only to sit in straight back chairs that recliners do not have the best support for us spineys.

I have a memory foam topper for our bed. I have to sleep with a body pillow. I still wake up, I take another med, ice is a major pain reliever.
I keep my meds next to me with water, and of course a commode incase the pain is to severe to walk downstairs to do so. OH AND THE LAPTOP whew need that lol

As being a mom I totally relate. I have 3kids etc. Hubby picks up most of the slack as in cleaning, groceries, all the running around.
I only do light cleaning as in dishes, laundry with the grabber, no vaccuming, mopping, bathroom you get the idea.
Not good as your still healing.
What restrictions does your Dr have you under??
As with most drs there is no bending , leaning , twisting until released to do so.

We certainly have our ups and downs with this surgery. A few steps ahead and a few back.
Also if your walking alot , that may want to be cut down a bit if its causing you pain.
I can't remember last year when I started sleeping well through the night. I do know it took awhile.
This year I am only 5 weeks out so I'm still at that early stage.

Your body just went through a major trauma and it takes some of us longer to re coup then others.

Let us know a little bit more when your able.
Sorry for all the questions but it helps us understand more and mabye we can give you some of our personal experiences.
Also sorry for my long post, but if ya stay with us I am like the queen of long pages of writing. O:) O:)

    Hang in there
  • I agree with Paul. It is very important to discuss this with your doc. He may want to do an MRI in order to rule out any new problems. Or it may be that you need to go in to pain management( may need nerve pain meds). Either way, you may not have to be suffering like this. Hope that you get some relief soon and please keep us posted.

  • I had scoliosis surgery when I was 13 yrs. old and two stainless steel rods were fused to my spine. I am 31 now and have horrible lower back pain, numbness, and shooting pain down my right leg. I have been to the doctor for the pain and was prescribed lortab 7.5. The meds work ok but I am not big on taking pills and was wondering if there is another alternative I could look into. Any help is appreciated.

  • What type of doc have you been seeing? just your GP? You may be better off seeing a Pain Management doc as the really specialize in controlling pain. They also offer other procedures than just the pills. Have you had a recent MRI? Have you been to a spine specialist? Maybe there are things that can be done. I have heard of people having hardware removed after fusion when it was determined that the hardware was causing pain. I have seen several members here that have had the surgery for scoliosis at a very young age and none of them seem to be doing well now. I am sorry to hear that you are one of these people but I am glad that you found us you will find much support and understanding here. Please keep us posted.

  • Here's a big group hug >:D< >:D< >:D< >:D< >:D< >:D<

I'm sorry you're suffering like this. There are times when you go thru bouts of terrible pain and have to ride them out like a storm. It happens to me all the time, and I sympathize with you. If this pain is so out of control, maybe you should call your doctor or go to the ER. Now that it's cooling off, it seems to make matters worse for me, and lots of us here with back and nerve pain.
I had a fusion 4 months ago and I still go thru misery. It's my second time around with no improvement of pain, and I may be looking to have a stimulator or pump next year. The Norco keeps me awake sometimes, but if I take it with a muscle relaxer, I fall asleep.
Right now I'm on Fentanyl 50 every two days, but I don't think I'd go up higher in fear of being asleep all day. This dose works for me for now because I remain alert and have no side effects.
I hope you get to feeling better and the pain gets under control. We're here for you 24/7. Take care
  • Talking with your doctor is the first step.

You mentioned fibro, why did you decide not to try any treatment/medication for this? I have heard some theories about traumtic-type situations causing fibro. It may also be true that having surgery might exacerbate the pain caused by the fibro.

I am certainly no expert, so I can't tell you what is causing your pain, or how to treat it. Talking to your doctor is the way to go. And a pain management doctor may be more helpful to you than a GP, or even your surgeon.

I'm sorry that you have such horrendous pain. And I hope you can find some relief soon.
  • hi there

how did all this start ?

or did you just 'start' having back pain ?

you need more, or a different combination of meds, and something to help you sleep !

keeping a 'pain diary' expain in detil, times, pain scores, wether doing anything effects pain, times of day etc

the surgery you had sounds very dramatic - perhaps the surgons damaged somthing while they were in there - you may have nerve damage.

i hope the doctors can help you real soon, mel xx
