20 years old, Herniated Disc HELP PLEASE

I received an MRI and was diagnosed with a slight herniated disc to the lumbar spine. All of my pain is located on the lower left side of my back and into left my leg. Before I was diagnosed, I had all the symptoms of the HD. However for about 1 week I have had a lot of pain focused in my left knee and going a bit downwards.

It hurts to put pressure on the knee or walk on it..I am nervous I can have something worse or even an unrelated illness. I saw a neurologist who said I didn't seem to have any nerve damage or anything blocking the nerves. So it doesn't look like I had any kind of HD complication such as losing feeling, loss of bowel movements, etc.

I am just very concerned about this knee pain. It is so focused in my knee and not radiating down my leg. Can this be symptoms for a HD or could I have something worse?

Thanks for any help.

  • Get to your Dr. or go to ER or Urgent care to get some tests done. It may be something else. I'm not a Doctor but you may need xrays etc. for that knee. It may or may not be related to your HD. Cover all your bases just to be on the safe side. This is in no way medical advice as I'm not a Doctor, Just a fellow spiney. Take care and keep us posted. Charry

  • I've had similar pain, and made the smart decision to seek a second opinion to make sure that I am getting multiple eyes on the problem - I would advise the same. Have had horrible HD issues since 2004 - had to stop squats and running to stop the flare-ups. The best thing you can do is to bring these problems to your doctor now, and get a specialist, or 2, on the case.

good luck - I have found this board to contain straight talk on a lifelong battle - back problems are very unique due to the fact that everyone's physiology and lifestyle's are different - don't let your doctor put you into a cookie cutter solution.

  • It could be something in your knee OR it could be referred pain. I had Sciatica that was all tangled up in my knee.
  • I just had my back problem start Monday this week. Went to Dr. yesteday and had an Xray...told me that L5 looked worrisome and might have herniated disc. recommended that I have an MRI. My symptoms the day of and after my incident were severe lower back pain. After that, and until this very day, my pain is in my right leg, from my groin to the knee cap. Most of the pain is in my right knee...I mean feels like somebody has a chisel and hammer trying to pry it off my leg! Today, my pain is more on the outer right leg/hip...but still have pain in my knee as well. Strangely enough, all of my leg pain is in the Front, not the back. I dont know...very weird, and yes, kind of scary.
  • So basically what I was trying to say is....the reason my Dr. ordered the MRI was because of the right leg symptoms...stating that the symptoms of leg pain makes him think that I had a herniated disc. Dont go for the MRI for 6 more days...but will let you know the outcome.
