Need to find a new pain doctor (just moved to south florida)

Hello all,

I just moved from NJ to FL (right on the county line between miami-dade and broward) and I commute to work in palm beach.

I've tried blind calling PM doctors from my insurance website, but most of them say they only do procedures, and the only one I spoke to who did prescribe said he would not renew my oxy for sure, and we would see what he could do...

I have serious pain, and i've tried nerve blocks, epidurals, acupuncture, aqua-therapy, etc... The only thing that controlls my pain are fairly large doses of the more potent medications.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could reccomend a pain management doctor anywhere in the north palm beach county down to south beach florida area who is understanding, sympathetic, and willing to use medications whether it's what i'm on now or something similar.

I have Aetna insurance and would prefer someone who is covered, but i'm willing to pay out of pocket if it means I can see a good pain medication management doctor.

Thank you in advance for any recomendations.

  • :S Jeremy,

I feel your pain, not just bodily but in trying trying to find a doctor to serve you without a capitlist motivation first. In their shoes, my experience has educated me to the understanding that they have to cover their rears here in Fla maybe more than other states. There are a lot of narcotic hawks down here that will answer all the doctors priliminary questions correctly. They have done their research. So, the doctors have to be very careful. The Feds plant patiences to enter the clinics with no other reason than to get a controlled substance script and then come down hard on the doctor. Take his/her license, fine and jail time. I've seen lines of patiences waiting at a clinic wondering what options are available when the Feds close the doors. They leave the really needy patience out of the consideration. Just left to their own devises. Area doctors
and ER's are over run with these patiences and those new doctors have the same nervous caution required to cover their liability. What a mess.
I'm not trying to ramble here, but to give you a bit of the reality of Florida PM clinics. Lots of the doctors are not trained for pain management but rather anesthiesiologists (sp?) who know that there is a gold mine in this specialty, even with the tremedous insurance they must carry. This info was offered to me by my curent PM Dr. after telling him my history with some sketchy PM doctors. His advise is to make sure the doctor is certified by the Pain Management entity of the state and /or medical society. These doctors at least have dedicated their studies to that specialty. Next, you have to understand that you have to prove you are worthy of them puting their careers on the line to treat you. That means, tests, tests and more tests. Add in a bunch of time and not copping an attitude. It's a very hard roe to hoe, but it seems the only way. Letters from your past physicians is a great help as well.

I'm surprised no one in the forun has come forward for you with advise of good PM clinics in that area. You'll see that a lot of these clinics have their treatment of the month, something they just recieved a weekend certification to offer you as an alternative to the risky pain meds that you know will help. Many refuse to write pain meds at all, or at least not until you jump through their hoops of whatever modality they're pushing. So, do some home work and the best of luck. I really hope you cn find a doctor that is interested in helping you more than padding their bank account.

    Best, Snorp
  • Why don't you get in with the doctor that told you that he would see what he could do? You have to go in with an open mind, and not expect to stay on your current medicine. I would advise you not to go in there and say you need the Oxy refilled because they will get suspicious. Just go in, and tell them what you have been on, substantiated by medical records, films, and referral, and then they decide what they want to do. I don't expect anyone to say, "sure, we'll refill your Oxycontin, go ahead and come in". That doesn't happen like that, especially nowadays.
What is causing your back pain? Have you had surgery? How long have you been suffering? We can help you with good advice if we know what's going on. Take care and welcome to SH.

  • I see a Pain Mgmnt Dr. in South Miami. It may be a hike for you but they take all insurances and this Dr. is excellent. I have been seeing him for about 6 years now. The name of the office is called "Premier Pain Care" and like I sad, it's in South Miami right off of Sunset and US-1. If you know your way around, it's easy to get to. Give them a call and see if you can get in soon. They've always been very accomodating. They have a website, check them out.
  • The doctor that i have been seeing is great. She is very professional and takes her time to do the right thing for your conditions instead of pushing pills down your throat like the shady other places. It is right in Broward county. I broke my c3 and c4 in my neck tn years ago surfing and do get excessive pain every so often. Anyway... her number is 9542528989. She has helped me a lot. hope that helps.
