Hey guys,

For quite some time I have been having this wierd sensation in my back. I dont know if this happens in everyone or not so I am curious to find out what it is.

Whenever I am standing up, I can rotate my body at the hip just side to side and hear this loud grinding noise in my back. I can even feel to of the vertebra twisting back and forth in the lumbar region. The sound is even more intensified it my mouth is open however i think that part is just because of an echo.

But could you please tell me if this grinding in my back is normal?

  • My neck grinds terribly, as does my mid and low back. Have you noticed whether the grinding changes when the weather changes, out of curiosity?? I talked to my physio about it, and she said she expected there would be less grinding when there are high pressure (warm) systems, and that is definitely the case with me.

Neither she or my doc had any concerns about it, but next time you see your doctor or specialist, it would be worth mentioning just to be sure.

  • It's funny that you mentioned this. I've had this grinding noise and can actually feel something rubbing together when I walk. This started a couple weeks after I had my L5 S1 fusion. I have no idea why it does this and I asked the doc and he said he didn't know either. It is uncomfortable, annoying and at times slightly painful. I was scared that it was part of the hardware coming lose or maybe it's just the new bone growth. Who knows, I was going to mention to him again on Friday when I go to find out my results of CT Scan.

  • I get this to mostly in my lower back in between my hips and i can feel it rubbing too.

I also get this in my shoulder when my bursitis acts up. which is inflammation and fluid building up. all ball and socket joints have bursa.. i think thats how it goes.

i get constant grinding in my back especially if its raining or going to rain. told my doc he didnt seem concerned.

    Always ask your doctor.

i am in no way in the medical field and just giving advice from my own personal experience.

btw. do you have pain when you here this grinding noise? my lower back gets really stiff when this acts up.

  • i have had my L5-S1 fused for about 3 years. now i have noticed a grinding in my back recently. i hope i do not have something going on with my equipment in there. how did you find out what is going on with your back, was it by x-ray or something else?
  • It's ironic that I came acrossed this post today cuz I was running some errands yesterday and finished my Christmas shopping and all day I was having that grinding again. It's been awhile since this has happened. I also had increased pain yesterday, prob due to overdoing it. I am now almost 1 1/2yrs post op and still experiencing this. I still have no explanation as to why this happens. It could be the broken screws but I have no idea.
