I have suffered from back pain for a while. I had a MRI in Nov 07, and another in Nov 08.The difference was night and today,so much so that my Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion was called off. In 07 I have Degenerative Disc Disease in L4 to S1 and disc herniation L5/S1. Now I have the following,I need the stuff really explained to me.Should I move this stuff to a different forum?

Impression=mild central canal and narrowing from L3-5.No lateralizing disc protrusion resulting in significant foraminal stenosis.

MRI of the lumber spine

L1-2 ~~Unremarkable

L2-3~~ Concentric disc bulge. mild bilateral facet hypertrophy

L3-4 ~~Concentric disc bulge. Superimposed central disc protrusion; small. Mild to moderate bilateral facet hypertrophy. Prominent epidural fat posteriorly. Mild central narrowing. No significant foraminal stenosis

L4-5~~ Concentric disc bulge. Superimposed broad-based central disc protrusion that was slightly eccentric to the right. Bilateral lateral recess narrowing. Mild bilateral facet hypertrophy contributed to mild central canal narrowing. No significant foraminal stenosis

L5-S1 ~~ Concentric disc bulge. Focal central broad-based protrusion. No significant compromise of the central canal or foramina

  • I've seen many different "wordings" on the MRI's and CT Scans. I really wish they could just break it down in laymen's terms. I think they do this so we have to spend all this money to see a specialist lol.

Sorry I couldn't be any help. It is frustrating when you have the results but don't know what they mean and the docs don't seem to explain them in length as if it insignificant to us. Mine says something about spurs in facet and the ortho didn't even mention that until I asked him and he was shocked that I knew.

I tried googling some of my results and got partial answers.
  • yeah, all he said was that he was shocked to see my results and to see how fast my got worse in such a short period of time and that there was no way he could do the Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion that he wanted to do.He said all he could do for me was a decompression and to let him know if I wanted it. He is done with me basically

He told me my pain doctor could help me with my pain.(the share the same practice)

  • Welcome to Spine Health. Members of Spine Health are here for support and to share personal experiences. Interpretation of MRI's, CT's and X-rays ... should be done by the physician that ordered them.

  • my wording must be wrong,I have seen my doctor and he blew through the reults.I want some personal in sight from someone who has or has somethings close to mine.
  • I would ask for 2nd opinion and a Neuro Dr. Did they do an EMG? I would ask if I waited if there would be any damage? I have arthritis and had facet joint injections on Saturday and my back feels better. Other then that I couldn't really say any more about the MRI. Take care. Charry

  • I am sorry to hear of your suffering. Have you thought about a 2nd opinion? I would take the MRI back to that doc or to another and not leave until I completely understand it. Surgery holds no guarantees and there are plenty of us that are worse after surgery than before. I have arthritis in my facet joints and bone spurs in my neck and lumbar region. I really do sympathize with your pain. I actually have been able to get some help through my PM. He has done rhizotomys (nerve burn) for me and they have helped a great deal. So, don't give up hope that you will find some pain relief. It just may not be through surgery. Good luck to you and please keep us posted.
