I feel like a ball in a pinball machine. I know that these doctor's time is precious - but gosh darn it - so is mine. I mean, do they think I just have $30.00 (co-pays) sitting around, a little extra fuel in my tank and some misc. money and I say to myself, Hey, Self, let's make a doctor's appt. so we can unload this burden of extra money and time!!!!! I mean I love donating my 30.00 and paying to park and driving 45 min to the downtown area, just to have you completely reverse what you said they previous week! I mean make a phone call and save us all from the hassles!!!!

I am having trouble getting our family bills paid from paying off all the testing and procedures medical bills! Come on - I wish I never had to see any doctor's again, I am not looking for attention, not a wimp to pain. If it all went away they would never see me again! I wish it was that easy, I go to them, because I am a gardener not a ##%$%doctor and I do not wish to treat myself!!!

thanks for letting me rage!

  • Unfortunately many people can be very short sighted and forget that others really have a hard time just making ends meet. When a person suffering chronic pain is told there's something that will possibly help and it will be tried at the next appointment, well the CP sufferer will do everything in their power to be there. The doc of course just has to show up every day to work and see the next patient, so it is routine for them and doesn't have the significance it did for you.

I'm really sorry you got let down so bad. What was his reaction to your questioning the lack of injections?

  • his response was - you got some range from the radiofrequency, so let's do that. He knew this at the appt. last week...so I don't understand at all the change. And of course every question I should have asked, came to me after I left. I was so stunned, and truely didn't want to make him mad - I am hoping he will help me. for right or wrong, i don't want to piss these docs off, their the ones who I hope will help me.

As I was leaving, the door to the next room was open and I could hear his next client, the vicodin and percs are cutting into the pain....blah, blah blah... and I am like, hell, i don't go in there asking for meds, i just want to feel better through the different options...

I was so angry and shocked, i don't think i would have been able to ask my questions so that they would have been appropriate. What was in my head was 'what the f*&^%' - don't think that would have gone over well!

thanks for words - and insight - yet again!

  • I learned the hard way that I had to write down all these questions and take them with me. When I would have to wait so long to get in to see the specialist, or after having left an appointment disappointed once again, I would be angry at the doc initially and then I would be angry at myself for "forgetting" to ask all these questions. Of course many of the questions didn't come to me until afterwards, but at that point I didn't care, I was upset knowing I was going to have to wait another month before seeing what route the doc would take next.

Unfortunately for a chronic pain sufferer a month seems like and eternity, whereas for a health care provider it's a blink of an eye.

Times like that showed me how to focus on making sure my next appointment went better from the perspective of me being better prepared, and taught me patience. I think one of the hardest lessons for me was to learn to be patient regardless of how I felt.

Hang in there and scream anytime you need to.

  • I'm sorry you're so upset, it's so hard to spend all this money when you really don't have it to spend and you feel like you're going nowhere. Is the doctor giving you anything for the pain, or does he think only radiofrequency will work for you? I get angry at myself too when I forget to ask something or mention something important; I just get anxious every time I see any doctor.
  • After emailing my doc over the weekend to help explain the change to my treatment plan, he called this morning.

After apologizing for being under the weather and not quite with it on our last appt., he has returned to his original plan, 'cancel the radiofrequency and getting botox injections'. he is going to give me injections in the back muscles as well as the neck.

I was impressed that he spoke to me, not a secretary, and that he actually apologized! I am relieved and feel very validated.

Cross your fingers for 13th (just realized it is a Friday the 13th!) thanks for everyone's kind words - very much appreciated!

  • Great news! Glad to hear that your doc is returning to the original treatment plan for you.

I tolerated the injections in the back wonderfully, but the ones in my neck I always hated for about 2 weeks afterwards. I didn't realize how heavy the head is and how much work neck muscle do, until they were taken off line.

Hey, Friday the 13th is a lucky day!

  • Heads and necks are HEAVY!
I spent 15 weeks in a minerva brace after fracturing C7, T3, T4, T5. When that thing came off I was afraid my head would fall off!
Of course they gave me a cervical collar to wear, "when you get tired" Uh, after 15 weeks in that thing I would curl up in my one and only favorite recliner with pillows, no way was I putting an sort of brace back on!

    Yeah, Heads are heavy!
    Back injections hurt me too!
Miserable things! I would have been OK with the pain, but they did not work at all for me :(

    Good news about the doc!
Sometimes they turn out to be good guys having a bad day!
Glad to hear you will be getting what you hoped for!

Almost forgot, I love email! I have used it repeatedly to get to docs who seem standoffish! The majority of them HAVE to use it now. So getting their address gives you a way to express yourself in writing. Not being pressured or levered to hurry up. I have got this to work on my PCP doc so wonderfully it is scary! He reads the emails and CALLS ME! Usually within the hour! See the trick is, he can't really respond by email! It is against Hippa regulations! My wife is a risk manager so I know all this stuff! Sending an email puts it out there forever and it can be snooped and hacked! There is nothing illegal for us to use it, but the doc can not respond with anything that HAS ANY PERSONAL INFO! So He has to call or have someone else call you!
    Sweet Deal Huh! :)
Oh, be aware that once you put that info out there it is PUBLIC DOMAIN. So don't talk about offing anyone or the fact that your mother-in-law is nicer than your mom or other fun stuff :0
Me, I don't care if peeps know I got problems! I used ot be all hung up about it, But after 15 years of going round and round with depression and stay at home dad to two sweet boys, I'm over all of that! Just don't care !

    Take care.
  • I hope the injections help you. I wish I could email my Dr. but today I remembered I wanted a Neurology referral and I just called the Receptionist to see if my Dr. could do the referral without me coming in. A list is a great idea since you only get 15 minutes of their time. I can't wait to hear your improvements from the Botox injecttions. Charry

  • When you said the head is heavy - what exactly do you mean? will I be holding my head up with my hands? The doctor told me i did not need anyone to drive me to the appt. - no sedation - but your comment got me thinking. I just would like to be prepared for how I shall feel afterwards. Botox is used to paralys the muscles, so do they not 'work' at all?

Since you have had this experience, please share this with me...thanks
  • You should be fine for driving, since the effects of the Botox take a while to begin setting in.

My experience each time was that within a few days of having the injections in my neck, I would get increased headaches from the muscle tension of the non-injected muscles having to "pick up the slack". This would typically last about 2 weeks before things started to settle into the new routine.

After each time I had the injections in my neck, I swore I would never do them again since those two weeks were so miserable. Of course pain and desperation can get a person to change their mind on just about anything.

A lot will also depend on how much Botox is used and in which muscles. So you may have a completely different experience.
