Thoracic Cyst?

I just found out that I have a cyst on my thoracic spine. I don't have any specific details as I haven't heard from my surgeon yet (my nerologist got my MRI report and told me). I knew that I had pain in the thoracic but thought it was caused by my cervical problems.

Does anyone have any experience with thoracic cysts that could give me more information? I'd sure appreciate it.

  • Hi Paul,

I have burning pain with any exertion. It feels like nerve pain but it's very localized, running down my back a few inches fron the "source". It always feels like I have a muscle knot there even when I don't. My thoracic spine feels like it's out of place and needs to be more stable. Heck, now that I'm trying to explain it it sounds pretty vague doesn't it?

Do you have any idea what causes these cysts? Do they always need to be removed?

  • I have been having pain in my upper thoracic are. I was diagnosed with a thoracic cyst on my spine. I am waiting to get an appt with the neurosurgeon. November 7,2009, I had a flare up with my back. I thought I was going to die. That is the most painful thing. I could not stand up straight I was bent over could not stand up straight. I had to go to the ER to get a pain shot. I only have those flare ups once every 3 to 4 months. But I am so tired and ready to be rid of this pain. Sohave you heard from your Dr. yet?

  • I have had a large cyst on the left side of my thoracic spine area for several months now. Last month I started having really bad burning pain between my shoulder blades and under my right shoulder blade. Also I get severe muscle spasms equal to a leg cramp in the same area if I try to sweep or stand up longer than a few minutes at a time. Lately the back of my right arm has been going numb too. The pain/burning is becoming unbearable. I have an appointment with the surgeon in 3 weeks and we will go from there. Until then, I haven't found anything to help the pain.
  • A few years ago after I had an MRI Neuro dr told me that I also had a cyst/tumor and the only way to find out about it was to have surgery. After a few months went and seen another Neurosurgeon with the xrays and report from the first dr. He told me that it was not unusual for people that have had spinal surgery to develop either or of these two. He was not for having surgery to find out about it because of the arachnoiditis I have and said that having more surgery would possibly just make the scar tissue worse. So for the last few years he has just been following me and the progression of my back, but still does not believe that there is any surgery they could do that would help with the pain...and would just probably end up making things worse. So I'm glad I don't have a dr that is eager to jump in and just do surgery. I don't know what specific pain cysts or tumors are supposed to cause but I know that I've had a lot of muscle spasms, buring pain (probably arachnoiditis) and every once in a while it feels as tho sharp pieces of bone are poking me in the area of past fracture and cyst/tumor is supposed to be. Good Luck to you and hope they can find a way to solve your particular problem. Yuma52
