I'm 44 years old and I have neck and lower back pain. My neck hurts all the time. When I move it forward, side to side, whichever way. When I put my hand on the back of my neck I can feel bones or something moving around in there. It doesn't feel right. I can't really explain it. I also have numbness in my right arm, it feels weird. I see a spine doc in 6 days. I was just wondering what it could be. I'm getting anxious about what the doc will find.

I also have lower back pain not as bad as neck. I feel sciatica pain down my right leg and on my left leg above my knee goes numb. Sometimes, the pain in my back wakes me up at night and i have to roll myself out of bed. Sometimes the pain is so bad I can't even put my shoes on and it goes away the next day. I'm thinking it's not muscle because that usually takes a couple days to heal, right? Anyways. Thanks for reading and and replies would be appreciated.

I can give more information if anyone wants it. I don't really know what else to put down. I don't have a physical job. I don't remember injuring my back or neck. My joints in my elbows and knees and ankles hurt. Anyways, Thanks for reading and look forward to replies.

  • Welcome to Spine-Health. You'll find many supportive, knowledgeable and generally just fantastic people here.

So we can reply to your post better, please tell us a little more. How long have you had your symptoms? Have you had any x-rays or other tests? Have you talked with your PCP about all of this?

As you can tell by my signature, I had major cervical spine surgery last October and since this last February I've had some pretty significant lower back problems and sciatic pain. I'm unable to go back to my spine surgeon to investigate this further or continue with post-op PT because of the loss of health insurance. (I just got confirmation of my Cobra coverage, so maybe I can go back to him now - I'm checking that out.)

Anyway, again, welcome to SH and please share more information about what, if anything, has been done so far.

  • Thanks for replying. Hopefully you'll be able to get Cobra and go back to PT.

Nothing has been done before. I've seen my primary care physician and she says it's probably arthritis just try to to make it crack. Anyways, got a new primary and I went for lower back pain and prescibed Ibrupofin and excersizes. With my insurance, I don't need a referrel so I just went and made the appt with the spine doc. My new primary said if I wanted to make the appt. I may have to change primary's. I do stretching and walking everyday. I have not had any exrays or tests as of yet as this is my first appt. with spine doc on Monday the 18th. I've had lower back pain more on than off for years and my neck pain, I've had continuously since I can't remember when it started. At least a month feeling like this and always some sort of pain. I basically have full motion of my neck but the same pain always as I move it. doesn't get worse or better.

What's really concerning me is when I move my neck and my hand is on my spine behind my neck I feel things moving in my spine. It's really aggravating and it's painful.

Thanks again and hopefully this will help.

  • Interestingly, I never had neck pain before surgery. I had muscle spasms in my back, tingling and numbness 24/7 in right arm and weakness and muscle pain in my left arm. I understand about the crackling - I could hear my neck crackling every time I moved it.

I'm glad you're going to a spine specialist. Depending on the findings (or possible lack thereof) you might want to consider getting a second opinion later from a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon. I'm anxious to hear what the new doc says on Monday.

I didn't know how my cervical spine got the way it was either, but in discussing it with my doc, we decided it probably was a slow chain reaction to a very bad car accident I had 30 years ago. That probably injured one disc and through the years just put pressure up the spine until my muscles got mad and threw a hissy fit.

Anyway, please keep us posted. It's been nice talking with you. :-)
  • hi and welcome to the forum! :H we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. there are some good nerve pain medications, like Lyrica, which could really help your sciatica. =D> talk to your doctor about it!! :-C good luck and stop by anytime. :D Jenny :)
  • I also had horrific neck pain in the beginning. The doc that I ended up with that actually did help me said that lots of times when 1 problem is corrected, the other corrects itself. He was right. I have not had anything done with my neck only low back and my neck doesn't bother me anymore. I wish you luck and please keep us posted with your results.

  • I went to see the spine doc today and they took exrays of both my lower back and my neck. Doc said I have arthritis of both my lower spine and my neck. He presribed PT for my lower back and scheduled a MRI for my neck. He wanted to concentrate on the worse of the two first. He also prescribed me Tramadol for the pain since I can't take ibprofin becuase I have Gerd and Colitis and other stomach problems. I'm having a colonoscopy (yuck) done on wednesday. GI doc thinks I have Colitis.

Does anyone here have arthritis of the neck or spine? What meds do you take for the pain? especially if you can't take and anti imflammatory. Who also should be prescribing pain meds. the specialist, your primary or a pain management. I'm thinking of seeing an arthritis doc for besides the spine and neck arthritis, I have pain in my ankles, knees, elbows and fingers.

I think there maybe something else going on besides arthritis because yesterday when i woke up I couldn't even put my pants on and I had shooting pain down my left leg. Could that be arthritis or something more.

Thanks for reading and look forward to your replies.
