Five Days into a Flare Up

:< Yes, I'm five days into a nasty, nerve pain flare up in my left leg. As I write this, I've got my tens unit on my back, covered by an ice pack, a heating pad on my left thigh and my fracture boot on my left foot (to help ease the pain in my foot when I walk) -- Boy, am I Pretty! (LOL)

I'm taking my Lyrica and pain meds -- even on prednisone from my ENT doctor (he said that would help my leg - NOT!). At least I am able to sleep.

Having another MRI next week and then will go to see a new ortho doc who ordered it. He'll be able to tell if surgery will be needed. He recommended I get an inversion table, which I bought on sale at Sports Authority this past Monday. I tried it and it is very relaxing but I'm worried it may be making this pain worse instead of better -- any body have any experience with using an inversion table?

I'm so confused my this whole saga. Some weeks the pain is manageable and I'm able to go grocery shopping or to Wal Mart, maybe to the dog park and then bam! pain comes flaring back and I'm stuck in bed. I've done everthing that most of you have done (except acupuncture - thinking about that).

Anyway, just felt the need to vent-- just laying around waiting for the flare to calm down.

Your pal in pain! :H

  • I'm sorry you're having another flareup. I'm trying Cymbalta for the leg pain which has helped but knocks me out for 12 hours. I'm only taking 150mg of Lyrica for the past 2 weeks. I hope it's just the weather and you're feeling better soon. Charry

  • Hi Deltalady,

Yeah, I know. This sciatica stuff REALLY stinks!

I laughed out loud when you mentioned grocery shopping and Walmart. Those are my two biggest problems. I race through the grocery store in record time, no more leisurely comparision shopping for me! I have two teenagers so I spend a considerable amount of time grocery shopping - these kids eat like cockroaches!

As for Walmart, well, as I've recently said to a friend, I think I've invented a new mental health disorder; "Walmart-a-phobia". I don't know about where you live, but here we have Super Walmarts. They are huge. I can only make it across half of it before I have to sit down. They do not have enough places to sit down in there! One time, I could not make back to the other side of the store, so I had to sit down in front of the pharmacy area, which had a bench, and there is always elderly ladies sitting there waiting for their prescriptions. These old girls clearly felt I was invading their turf, they gave me the dirtiest looks! And, they were complaining about everything and anything. When I finally got out of there and into my car, I sat there and cried b/c now I have to sit with the old ladies! Is this what my life has become? I can laugh at myself now, but this affliction sure is getting old!

Anyhow, I hope you feel better soon and are doing o.k.

  • Hi Sugaree,

That was a great story and yes I'm in with the old ladies at Wal Mart too! Obviously you haven't discovered the electric carts -- you have to go early in the morning before all the families get going to get a cart but I blaze trails through Wal Mart, Target and Publix (my local grocery store). I once wiped out a display at the check out counter at Publix with my cart -- king of misjudged as I tried to turn the cart into the checkout isle (thank you pain killers). When I had my foot surgery in October (which started this whole saga), I became a big fan of the electric carts -- had my fracture boot on my left foot and my leg propped up on the side of the basket on the cart -- what a vision I was!

Last Sunday I went grocery shopping, had a full cart and was just about to check out when all the drugs kind of hit me at once -- thank goodness there wasn't a long line and I got out of there and home just in the nick of time -- Note to self, eat something before taking drugs and venturing out in the heat to a store!

Thanks for the story - your sister in pain.
