Femoral Nerve pain

AnonymousUserAAnonymousUser Posts: 49,321
Last August I had a painful run that culminated in getting up out of my chair at work later in the day and falling flat on my face :/ After 6 months of testing, poor and missed diagnosis, I finally found someone (by accident) who KNEW that I had a torn labrum. During that whole fiasco my (fabulous) Physical Therapist had an inkling that either it was a back issue or there was more than one thing going on.

I had surgery (laproscopic labrum debridement) in February I was back to 60-70 miles per week by the end of June. One evening of a long run on pavement ended it all - I am now TOTALLY UNABLE to run, as the pain and feeling of dragging my leg is unbearable, even with heavy doses of Advil.

I have had debilitating pain in my right inner thigh upon every heel strike; it feels like a metal rod is firing up between my hip/groin and my knee (inner thigh section). Doc originally thought this was a post-labrum tear surgery complication, possibly a groin strain, but the PT believes it is lower back related (possibly L2/L3/L4) and probably was part of the original injury. I went back for another PT "second opinion" last night who took some videos, did some tests and asked a LOT of questions... Between the two of them they are about 95% sure now that it involves the Femoral Nerve. So I guess Sciatica is not the correct term for it, but it does seem similar. Has anyone had Femoral Nerve pain like this? Has anyone experienced this?

Any help or experiences appreciated!

  • Have you had any imaging studies done of your spine? If not, it would seem that would be a good place to start. What type of doctor is treating you now?

When my surgeon thought I had femoral nerve problems after my fusion, the pain was quite different from what you are describing. It ran more down the front side of my thigh...not at all in the groin or inside of thigh.

You might want to search for a "dermatome map" and see which spinal segment might correspond to where you are feeling the pain. It is possible you have some spinal nerve root compression that is causing your symptoms. You might want to make an appointment with a spinal specialist to either rule in or rule out the possibility of lumbar spine issues.

Have you thought about giving up running for awhile to see if this pain heals up on its own?
  • I have symptoms just like yours. Pain in my groin that runs through femoral nerve to below my knee, right side. I can't run anymore because of the terrible pain in my groin/hip. Docs think it is spinal stenosis, but the MRI doesn't show a problem in the area that might create these symptoms. Have you had any success in diagnosing you problem?
