Excruciating SHARP, ELECTRIC Pain

  • i have the same condition as you whereby you dip your chin and feel pain shooting down your butt and legs. i've had it over 3 years and was sure it was my neck. i saw dr after dr. i had mri of neck but my neck was not causing the trouble. finally i met with neurosurgeon and he said its not my neck. he said the covering over the spinal column called the dura can stretch. when you stretch it by dipping chin you are irritating nerves down low almost like a telegraph wire. so dont be surprised if its the lumbar only thats causing pain....
  • There are some great specialists at the University of Washington Medical Center. If you google it you will find a search engine for different specialties and different clinics in the Seattle area.

OK...NOW that I have everyone's attention: I detest guns....would never end my life (at least not that way...eeeewwwwwww)and sometimes I think the *Alternative* might be better.
Pete....so you don't think it has to do with my neck/head area? WHY does it hurt so much when I open my mouth to take a bite of food? Why does it cause sharp pain to inhale & exhale? Do you experience these symptoms as well? Is it really ALL about the spine and this disease?
I dread going to bed at night(cannot sleep and hurt SO much) and waking up(trying to walk just to get to the bathroom and moving in general), and then I have to do it all over again day after day. I keep thinking I will wake up one day and everything will be OK and I can walk and move again without pain. This disease is really hard to accept.
C....I will look into the U of WA immediately. Thanks again for the input and support~L.P.
  • you scared the daylights out of me when you mentioned the gun....glad you just wanted to wake us up...you did!!!
theres so many things going on. both dercums desease and back issues. its going to be difficult to separate out back/spine from dercum desease because both cause pain. what specialist do you see for dercums?
the lipomas pulling on nerves could be anywhere. although your chest/torso may be the area that the bulk of them reside. my first thought is to get a full body scan. how else could you find your multiple problems.
here is a link to more info on dercums.
    https://www.genome.gov/17516629
did you have relatives that had dercums?
    when did it start?
i think you better find a good spine surgeon to manage the back situation. even though you may not use surgery at least he will be the best equiped to handle the back. he may also want to remove some of the lipomas that are pressuring nerves.
i wonder if any of these lipomas reside near the spine.
so sorry you have two pain problems. it is a very complicated case. i hope you are using a very good hospital with very knowledgeable drs.
oh...you asked me about when i tilt chin forward wether i get pain around mouth. you also mention pain from breathing. my pain is only in my butt and legs when i dip my head. my guess is that your pain is from the lipomas but only a scan will tell us the answer.
i understand the dercums can also cause depression and confusion so if any of those troubles are bothering you report it to the dr.
check out the site i gave you. get info and try to tackle this health problem. pm me any time if you want to throw me ideas........pete

  • i googled that univ. of washington med ctr and it looks good. are you near there?

  • ~X( Ok....I researched U of W and all I came up with were surgeons....I am NOT getting surgery EVER, so how do you locate a doctor who doesn't want to cut into you, but wants to HELP you and find out WHY you are having all these problems and are they ALL related to the spinal stenosis.
Because IF my only *other* option is surgery, then I will have to live with this pain and do the best I can. I guess my next plan would be DRUGS, so I'll find a drug dealer (doctors are, afterall, glorified drug dealers).
I am beyond frustrated right now.
    Thanks for the input

  • I) And...I've been sitting WAYYYYY too long, but I wanted to get back to you on your input/comments.
I think I have a multitude of physical issues going on that is creating pain. That is why I am SOOOOOO frustrated trying to figure out WHAT to do.....WHO to see....and then the waiting....getting the appointment....waiting....getting in.... then maybe NOT what you expected, and again going to plan B.This has been going on for years for me, but it got really bad (unbearable)at the beginning of this year.
Anyway...in regard to Dercum's Disease....I do have a few painful lipomas in my back and one on my inner thigh that even the slightest touch and I am screaming!!!!!
I am too tired to think anymore tonight.
Thanks for your input....I really appreciate this group.

I sent you a PM with a link to the Washington State Pain Centers.

  • :) Hi C..I never recieved any link, so could you kindly send it again?
I have made an appt with a neurologist for Sept 8th and hopefully he will be able to come up with some answers OR...lead me to someone who can HELP without surgery.
I have had THREE amazingly *almost" pain-free days. I have added numerous supplements to my diet which I truly believe are helping. As I sit here right now, I have NO....I repeat, NO PAIN!!!!! So, go figure. However....in the morning I can barely walk and need my cane....same in the evening, but during the day, I am relatively pain-free.
Nevertheless, I feel there are *other* issues in my body going on, like Dercum's Disease, which do affect nerves.
So, I am feeling pretty darn good right now.
Don't forget to send me that link~Take care~L.P.
  • To answer your question, I am not that familiar with Seattle specifically, but I was referring to the pain management departments at one of the world renowned medical institutions in the area such Swedish Medical Center, Virginia Mason Medical Center or the University of Washington Medical Center. I am sure that they have some really great brains in one of those great institutions that you will find very helpful.

Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.

    Take Care
