Seeing My Doctor Today!!

I have been having a very rough time of it since I fell last week.
I injured my shoulder struggling to get up and am in a lot of pain. Both in my shoulder and back in my legs again.
I have had to cut out all my pain medication because it has been making my legs swell.
They swell up huge and feel just awful. Look and feel like they will burst. I can't wear my shoes either because my feet swell so bad too.
I have tried fluid pills to get the swelling down but no help at all!! I keep my legs elevated....even that does not help.
The only way I can get the swelling down is to cut out all pain meds.
I am going to ask my Doctor to change my pain meds if he will. He does not want to give me any pain meds period!!
To cut out all your pain medication is rough when you really need it so very bad but when it is doing you harm that's what you have to do!!
I do really well on the pain medication I am taking except for the swelling in my legs. I can't stand that.
I am on 15mg Ohycodone every 4 hours. Has anyone else had this problem with this pain medication??
Thanks for listening. Will let you know what my Doctor says today.

  • Sorry to hear you haven't recovered very well from your fall. I hope the doctor can do something for you today, good luck!!! I never had that problem with oxycodone, but I just stopped taking amitriptyline, which I took to help with sleep and hoping it would help with pain as well. The only thing I could tell it really helped with is gaining weight!! I go to see my PM this morning, and I'm going to ask him about different meds as well. I also get my nerve block shot, I can't wait, as at least it gives me some relief for a day, and I get to catch up on rest.
I hope your doc can give you something to help you out!!! And I hope you had a great weekend with your visitors in spite of the fall!!!

  • But have never had it happen to me. I am so sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble, please let us know what your doctor tells you today.

I have a lot of swelling but they say mine is from the pressure on the L5 and S1 nerves. It is something that at times drives me NUTS. My feet and legs swell so bad that I can barely walk (and that is with a walker) to and from the bathroom.

I have never been on this med before, and it sounds like a good one from all that I have read, I am very sensitive to pain meds, (they all make me extremely sick), I take Percocets 7.5, and have to break them in half and take parts every 2 hours to keep from getting sick. Meds to help queasiness do not seem to be helping at all.

Sorry to have rambled on here, but please let us know how things go today. I too am seeing my dr today. Oh yea !

    Hugs

  • Good luck at your appointment today. I am praying you will have an easy time with the doctor regarding the pain medication you so desperately and obviously need. Maybe the meds are not the cause of swelling. I hope you get answers today!

    Take care,
    Melissa
  • who said you had to cut out pain meds? i don't believe narcotics cause swelling. swelling can be caused by inactivity. why won't he give you pain meds? i would get a new dr if he is closed minded to pain meds. it sounds like he is using swelling as an excuse to not give you pain meds. drs who don't like narcotics seem to make uo stories so they won't have to give them out. or better yet
they lie so they don't have to give out pain meds
get a new dr or a pain dr if you have pain

I have 4 fusions from L5-3, the latest last May '12 where they fixed my disc that broke. They went through my side this time. I take 40 mg of oxycontin 4x a day and 4 fenatyl lollipops 300 micro gms 4x a day.
  • Can't wait to hear how the dr visit goes for you. Hope he gives you some relief.
I've been down the last couple of days. Threw my back and neck out. Trying to relax.
Take care and luv u girl!

  • Am back from the Dr.
He seems to think I tore my rotor cuff and has perscribed PT.
Neither would he change my pain meds. Am still on the same thing. He did not think the swelling is caused by the meds but if you do not take it and no swelling that's proof enough for me.
I ask hem what to do about my legs swelling and he said to do the same thing I had been doing....stop taking my meds!! Well DUH!!
I am his first and only chronic pain patient and he really does not know how to treat my pain. He does not feel qualified. Soooo send me to someone who can treat my pain!!
Sheesh....I am gonna lay down for a while.
    Thanks Everyone

  • boy you have had an up and down ride. one of these days i hope your situation stabilizes in a good situation.
we all are hoping you improve....pete
  • :( Bless your heart! Just when you were starting to feel better the fall you took puts other things in motion.

I have a question. You've been on pain meds for a while -- when did you notice the swelling in your legs? Is this fairly new? Did you start on new pain pills and then the swelling started?

Is the pain in your feet back? I hope not.

Sending you a >:D< and an O:) to watch over you while you're feeling ill.

Get some rest and take care,

    Judy
  • When the Dr has only you for a Chronic pain patient, ask him/her to send you to an pain person or Neurologist/or Anesthesiologist, at least they know how to treat pain.

Some are getting certified in the pharmacology of pain management as well. They know what to do and how to sort it out.
  • or you might want to try a physiatrist. They also practice pain management, just like the docs that are trained as anesthesiologists and interventional pain management docs. Read about the specialty here:

    http://www.aapmr.org/condtreat/what.htm

I have found them to be more helpful than those who come to the specialty from anesthesiology. They have many more tricks in their bag other than drugs and medications.

My MIL just had a similar fall and tore her rotator cuff. They are now trying to decide whether she needs surgery for it, after having had 2 months' worth of physical therapy. I hope yours is just sprained and that you will not need surgery.

I'm praying you feel better soon.

    xx Gwennie
