I am currently taking 10mg/Hydrocodone along with other pain meds for my neck/arm pain. NS told me I was a canidate for surgery but that he thought my DDD/stenosis, hadn't progressed enough to perform surgery. I am currently involved in PT. I currently work for a college and am near sleep at my desk from the medicine. Any tips besides taking meds with food that would decrease my sleepiness at work. Its not bad enough I'm still in pain, but I'm almost sleeping at my desk after I take a pain pill. Any suggestions....Thanks, Hope everyone has a happy holiday season!

  • Perhaps speaking with your Dr. about a long acting medication may help with the tiredness and give you the pain relief you need to get through the day. Have you considered getting long term disability if you're not able to function at work. I'm currently on it since I'm unable to work taking narcotics. I hope you get a second opinion Surgeon also just to make sure you have another opinion whether you need surgery or you can put it off. I hope you have a Happy Holiday season as well. Take care. DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • I also use Norco (hydrocodone). Mine are 5 mg and 325 of tylenol. I can take Tylenol & Advil during the day and Norco in the afternoon/evening to manage my pain. Otherwise I would be brain dead as well. Although lately I have been taking it almost around the clock.

Your doctor may want to give you some Celebrex type meds instead of the OTC pain meds. I used to take Celebrex/Relefen etc but my stomach no longer can take the iritation. I have been on them for years and years.

You can also break the 10 mg hydrocodone in half(at least that is what my NS told me when I was on the 10 mgs after my lumbar fusion).

I find that caffene can help off set the sleepy feeling I get. I can drink green tea all day long.

    Good luck,

After taking narc meds for years i have found that the "bad" side effects will diminish while the pain control is still obtained .... I take 60 mg of Norco 10/325 (3 in the morning and 3 around noon) and 30mg MScontin in the am and at night.

I filed for SSD but had to go back to work or I'd be homeless now. (have no idea how that will all turn out)

How fun is it to try to work while under the influence? Not much.
